Blood Bike West B*W is an all-volunteer charity delivering out-of-hours urgent & emergency blood samples, scans, med

OUR OPERATING HOURS FOR DELIVERY SERVICES ARE 7PM TO 7AM MONDAY-FRIDAY AND 24 HOUR COVER ON SATURDAY AND SUNDAY

CALLS: We welcome calls in advance of our official cover start times, so please ring us as soon as you know your requirement. If your call is not answered immediately, leave your details and we will call you back. If your item is large or awkward and for any reason cannot fit on our motorcycles, we have a van available thanks to our sponsor, Northgate Vehicle Hire. Blood Bike West is an all-volunteer charitable organisation established to deliver blood, blood samples, human breast-milk and urgent medical supplies, over weekends and over holiday periods, between hospitals, healthcare sites (hospice, clinics, care homes, laboratories etc). "Our mission is to act as an Voluntary Emergency Transportation Service that aims to assist in positive patient outcomes through the efficient and reliable transport of medical consignments between hospitals and other medical care facilities primarily, but not exclusively, in the West of Ireland, at no cost to patients." Outside normal office hours, hospitals have no permanent method to transfer urgent medical supplies, scans or test samples between hospitals and other sites. Blood Bike West offer to carry out this service free of charge, ensuring the limited resources of the health & care providers can be used where they make a difference. Blood Bike West is funded entirely from charitable donations and aside from some key sponsors for equipment, it is run solely by volunteers, giving their free time to run and deliver the service. In critical situations, blood or other medical items need to be delivered urgently in order to save a patient's life. Blood Bikes, with their distinctive livery, emergency lights, and narrow profile, can quickly get through busy traffic reaching the destination quickly and safely. For items which won't fit on a motorcycle or during dangerous weather conditions we are grateful to Northgate Vehicle Hire (www.northgatevehiclehire.ie) for their continued sponsorship of our distinctive Blood Bike West van. 💙 Sometimes the most important journeys are the ones that bring help right to someone's door. 🏍️

Saturday evening saw our volunteer Michael Rooney out on a special delivery.

A feeding machine/pump was needed for a child in the community in County Roscommon. The equipment was collected from LauraLynn Children's Hospice and brought towards Roscommon, with a link-up with our friends from Blood Bikes East in Kilbeggan along the way. 🤝

It's a lovely example of what our volunteers do. Our work isn't always about moving items between hospitals and laboratories. Sometimes it's about helping get essential equipment to a family in the community when they need it.

No fuss, no fanfare — just volunteers giving their time to help someone else. ❤️

A huge thank you to Michael for taking on this run, to LauraLynn for their support, and to our fellow volunteers at Blood Bikes East for the link-up.

Because behind every journey, there's a reason we're needed. 💙

🏍️💙 One volunteer, many miles, and so many people making a difference along the way! 💙

Meet Johnny Burke, one of our fantastic Blood Bike West volunteers! 👋

From hospital wards and laboratories to healthcare facilities across the region, our volunteers are constantly on the move, helping to transport vital medical items to where they’re needed. Every journey has a purpose, and every handover plays its part. 🏥🧪📦

But Blood Bike West is about more than the miles we cover. It’s about the people we meet along the way — the nurses, doctors, laboratory teams, reception staff and all the healthcare professionals working behind the scenes every single day. ❤️

We’re so grateful for the warm welcomes, the help with collections and handovers, and the incredible work you all do caring for patients and supporting our healthcare services.

And of course, a huge thank you to Johnny and all our volunteers who give their own time to keep these journeys moving, often when others are at home with their feet up! 🏍️💙

It takes a team to make it all happen, and we’re proud to play our part.

To all the hospital, hospice, laboratory and healthcare teams across the West — thank you for everything you do. We couldn’t do it without you! 💙👏

🏍️💙 One early start, plenty of miles, and lots of important deliveries! 💙

Our volunteer Sean was up bright and early for a busy run, starting at the NICU in University Hospital Galway (UHG), delivering medical devices to The Coombe and Holles Street hospitals in Dublin. 🏥

There was also a sample collected in County Roscommon to be brought to Temple Street Hospital, before linking up with our friends from Blood Bikes East in Kilbeggan. 🤝🏍️

That's a serious amount of ground covered in one run! Every stop has a purpose, and every delivery helps keep vital medical items moving between the healthcare teams who need them.

And in between all those miles, there are the everyday moments that make volunteering special — meeting people, working together and being part of something that makes a real difference. 💙

A massive thank you to Sean for giving up his time and getting out there, and to all the healthcare teams and fellow Blood Bike volunteers who help make these journeys possible. 👏

Different hospitals, different destinations, but one shared goal: getting vital items where they need to be. ❤️🏍️

🏍️💙 Two wheels, two charities, one shared passion for helping others! 💙🏍️

Last Saturday, our Blood Bike West volunteer Ted met up with John from Blood Bikes East (BBE) in Kilbeggan for a catch-up and a photo! 👋

The meet-up was organised by our very own controller, Bridie, bringing people together who understand the value of volunteering and giving their time to help others. ❤️

While we might cover different parts of the country, we share the same goal — helping to get vital medical items where they need to be, supporting our healthcare services and making a difference to patients when it matters most.

It’s always lovely to connect with fellow Blood Bike volunteers and share that sense of community. 💙

A big thanks to Ted, John and Bridie for making it happen!

Different routes, same mission. 🏍️🤝💙

🥛🏍️ A little late-night delivery for the tiny ones 💙

Monday evening saw Craig back out on the bike, picking up a huge load of milk from the NICU at UHG and heading off towards Castlebar. 🏍️🥛

With quiet, dry roads, it was a lovely spin up to MUH SCBU, where Craig got a warm welcome from the team on the night shift — complete with a cuppa and a bit of a chat before heading back home. ☕😊
We love seeing these little moments between our volunteers and the incredible healthcare teams we work with. ❤️

Behind every one of these journeys are people doing their bit — nurses caring for tiny babies, volunteers giving their time, and teams making sure what is needed gets where it needs to be.

Fair play, Craig, and a big thank you to all the team at MUH SCBU for the warm welcome as always. 💙

Another journey completed, another load safely delivered. 🏍️🥛💙

😂 NOEL… WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT THE SELFIES! 😂

Our volunteer Noel out on the road doing what he does best — getting the job done and keeping things moving for Blood Bike West. 🏍️💙

But apparently, there is one important part of every run that simply cannot be skipped…
📸 The customary super awkward selfie! 🤣

Noel himself has admitted it’s his “customary super awkward selfie” — you’d swear it was his first time! 😂🤦‍♂️

We reckon he's being far too hard on himself… although after seeing the evidence, we're not entirely sure! 😜

And a big thank you to the lovely receptionist at Galway Hospice for taking the time to pose for the photo and, more importantly, for always giving our volunteers such a warm welcome when they call in. 💙

These little moments mean a lot, and we really appreciate the teams who help make our runs that bit easier.

Fair play Noel for giving your time, getting out there and doing the important stuff — even if the selfie game still needs a little work! 😂🏍️💙

💙 Behind every Blood Bike West run, there are people helping make it happen. 💙

Our volunteer Mark was out on a hospice run, collecting a vital sample from Galway Hospice and bringing it safely to where it needed to go. 🏍️📦
And while we often share photos of our volunteers out on the bikes, we thought we'd share a little glimpse of the other side of the journey too. ❤️
A huge thank you to the lovely team at Galway Hospice, and to everyone who helps our volunteers with collections and handovers along the way.
It might look like a simple handover, but behind that package is a patient, a healthcare team and a reason why getting it from A to B matters.
And of course, a massive thank you to Mark for giving his time and doing the run. 🏍️💙
That's Blood Bike West — people helping people. ❤️

💙 WE NEED YOUR BLUE TOKENS! 💙

We have some lovely news to share with you all — Blood Bike West has been chosen to be part of the Tesco Community Fund at Tesco Knocknacarra! 🥳

If you're shopping in Tesco Knocknacarra over the coming weeks, you'll be given a blue token at the checkout, and we'd absolutely love it if you'd consider dropping your token into the Blood Bike West box. 💙

For those who might not know what we do, our volunteers provide an emergency medical transport service, moving everything from blood, blood samples and medical supplies to breast milk and other vital items between hospitals, hospices, laboratories and healthcare facilities — often throughout the night, at weekends and on bank holidays. 🏍️❤️

We are completely volunteer-run, so support like this genuinely helps us keep our bikes, vans and equipment on the road and our volunteers trained and ready to respond when we're needed.

And this is where every little token really does help. 🥰

📍 Tesco Knocknacarra
💙 Look out for the Blood Bike West box
🗓️ Voting runs until the beginning of December
So next time you're doing your shopping, please think of Blood Bike West and pop your blue token in our box. Every single one makes a difference. ❤️

A massive thank you to Tesco Ireland for including us in the Community Fund, and to everyone who takes the time to support us.
Your little blue token could help us keep riding when someone needs us most. 🏍️💙

🏍️❤️ Another important run for Blood Bike West

Today, volunteer Craig was out on the road, completing a hospice run from Galway Hospice to Haematology.

Another journey that might seem simple, but these are exactly the kind of deliveries that need to get where they're going safely and on time. 🏥📦

Craig was there to collect the package and get it safely to the Haematology team — one more essential journey completed by our volunteers.

Every run is different. Every destination matters. And behind every journey is a volunteer giving their own time to help keep healthcare services moving. ❤️
Thank you, Craig, for another run completed and another job done.
