For the first time, Ireland's Clinical Measurement Physiology workforce has been counted.
978 qualified Clinical Measurement Physiologists. That's more than double the figure of around 450 that has long been quoted from public sector whole time equivalent data.
Today the IICMP publishes the First National Census of Clinical Measurement Physiologists in Ireland, covering Cardiac, Gastrointestinal, Neurophysiology, Respiratory and Vascular Physiology across public and private services, education and industry.
The census was initiated and led by Karen Dobbyn, Chief Executive Officer of the IICMP.
It shows a large and significant workforce within the Irish health system, and one that is under real pressure. It gives clear evidence of physiologists working at clinical specialist and advanced practice levels without the grading or recognition to match, limited career progression, and experienced colleagues leaving for other careers and overseas.
The expertise of Clinical Measurement Physiologists is central to patient care. We will be sharing these findings with the Minister for Health and the Department of Health in due course, to support the case for regulation, a national register, investment in education and training, and career structures that reflect that expertise.
