Gardening Sustainably during the Warm Spell.

It‘s during extreme weather conditions such as those we are currently experiencing that some of the sustainable measures we have put in place around the village really pay off.

Our Rainwater Harvesting Barrels are a great help with thirsty plants and flowers. A good tip is to water at soil level rather than spraying the tops of plants which has less benefit.
Our Rainwater Planters need very little water as they have an inbuilt irrigation system.

We also applied layers of lovely rich organic mulch to our flower beds from our Wire Leaf Composters in the Glebe Walk. It feeds the soil, suppresses weeds and reduces evaporation. How good is that?

Our Xeriscape beds by the shop and on the Tullamore Rd need very little water as they are planted through a deep mulch of chippings.
It looks like we may get these conditions more often so we must learn to manage them as sensibly and sustainably as we can.

Internationally acclaimed Finnish sculptor Jaakko Pernu will conduct a two week artist residency in Geashill in September which will culminate in the making of an environmental sculpture entitled “Planting”in the Glebe Walk.

The project - presented by Geashill Tidy Towns in partnership with Offaly County Council and supported through Culture Ireland - will form part of Ireland’s wider cultural engagement during its Presidency of the EU.

The site-specific sculpture will explore themes central to his practice: landscape, heritage, community, sustainability, and our relationship with the natural environment.

The residency will include:
- Public Open Studio Sessions.
- ⁠Artist Talk and Discussion.
- ⁠Education Programme with Geashill National School.
- ⁠Community Music Evening at St. Mary’s Church.
- ⁠Documentary Film Exploring the Residency Process.

Sign for the Yellow Lough Orchard
Our recently planted little orchard of 7 native apple trees, including Lady‘s Finger of Offaly and Irish Peach are now marked by their very own nameplate.
The trees, planted and cared for by our volunteers will have their first fruits removed so that energy will go into producing strong roots and lots of apples in future years.

Beeline and Butterfly Bed
We provide lots of foodplants such as native Buckthorn and encourage Nettle Nurture Areas to support butterfly caterpillars.
This pollinator friendly bed, created in partnership with Gala/ Inver Geashill offers valuable nectar as fuel for adult butterflies and bees.
A big thank you to John Ahern for helping prepare the beds, to Dominic Trimble for cutting out the butterfly and bee shapes we designed. Our thanks also to Padraig and Éabha Direen for installing them, and to our loyal volunteers for planting the beds.
This has been a real community effort.

Spirit of the Cauldron - Sign
We’ve had lots of enquiries about the Geashill Cauldron, the sculpture, and how the stones and the metal imagery relate to it.
This is a temporary sign we’ve put up to help out with some of these when you pay a visit - which we hope you will.

One week on, the Spirit of the Cauldron sculpture is bedding in beautifully in The Green in Geashill.
Water is trickling down from the cauldron over the carved stones, light is playing across the cut out figures on the metalwork and swallows are skimming on the adjacent pond.
The sculpture, which has been supported by the CreativIrl programme in Offaly County Council was launched by Cllr Liam Quinn of Edenderry Municipal District last Friday evening.
The Cauldron project has been a four year collaboration between stone carver, Ciaran Byrne, weld-artist Luke Carson, the Wednesday Club and local community, and of course Geashill Tidy Towns.
The Cauldron may lie in the National Museum, but its spirit has been well and truly restored to the village.

Photographic Exhibition - A Day in the Life of Geashill
There was a lovely atmosphere at the opening of our exhibition last evening in the Old School in Geashill. With one hundred mounted photos on display and 150 more on a slideshow there was so much to enjoy.
There are images of people at work or play, nature and wildlife, and of course Geashill’s stunning architecture.

The exhibition, funded by Creative Ireland, was opened by Councillor Liam Quinn, Cathaoirleach of Edenderry Municipal District of Offaly County Council.

It’s open until 4pm, today, Sat, and from 10am to 4pm tomorrow, Sun.
