Large crowds gathered at The Well in Moate this evening for a meeting focused on the cost-of-living pressures facing households across the country.

Fuel and home-heating costs, taxation and farming were among the issues discussed, with several political representatives addressing those in attendance.

The meeting was organised by members of the group behind nationwide fuel protests earlier this year, as attention now turns to what action the group could take next.

Fuel protest group to meet in Moate as pressure grows over pump prices.

A group which previously organised major protests over the cost of fuel is set to meet in Moate this weekend, as concerns over petrol and diesel prices continue.

The People of Ireland Against Fuel Prices Protest group will hold a meeting at The Well in Moate at 5.30pm on Sunday.

The gathering comes as hauliers raise concerns about the impact of current fuel prices, warning that costs are becoming increasingly difficult to sustain.

The issue has also returned to the political agenda, with the Government indicating that reductions in fuel excise duty could be extended beyond their current November deadline.

Tánaiste Simon Harris has responded to the possibility of renewed protest action, saying the State would not be held to ransom by threats of further disruption.

The group has previously been involved in fuel protests which caused significant disruption in parts of the country.

Sunday evening's meeting will now take place against the backdrop of renewed pressure over fuel costs and calls for measures to ease the burden on motorists and the haulage sector.

ESB CEO Gets €92,000 Pay Rise Following Government Approval

The chief executive of the ESB, Paddy Hayes, has been granted a pay increase of almost €92,000 following Government approval.

His annual salary has increased from €318,083 to €410,000, representing a rise of around 29%.

According to the ESB, the increase reflects the size and complexity of the organisation's operations.

The company also said it is the first salary increase for the role since 2011 and follows an independent review of executive pay across commercial State bodies.

The increase was approved by Minister for Public Expenditure Jack Chambers following a recommendation from Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment Darragh O'Brien.
