Tramore RNLI rescues three people from rocks following jet ski incident

Tramore Lifeboat RNLI crew were paged at 15.46 on Saturday 30th May to launch their D class lifeboat.

A member of the public reported witnessing a jet ski eject someone into the water near Tramore Pier and called the emergency services.

In a multi agency call out involving Tramore Coastguard, the National Ambulance Service and the Gardai, Tramore Lifeboat launched at 15.52. Within two minutes the crew located the jet ski and subsequently found three persons stranded on the rocks, under the cliffs at the Doneraile walk.

Two casualties were taken on board and brought to Tramore Pier. The lifeboat then returned and transferred the third casualty from a different location on rocks under the cliffs shortly afterwards.

All casualties were in good health and needed no medical attention at the time. The Marine Rescue Coordination Centre then requested that Tramore Lifeboat recover the jet ski, as it posed a navigational hazard to other water users. The jet ski was towed to the Ladies Slip area of Tramore Beach for recovery where the lifeboat crew were assisted by members of Tramore Coastguard.

Tramore Lifeboat returned to base and was washed down, refuelled and ready for service at 16.30.

Clive Smith Lifeboat Operations Manager said: 'Helm, Dave O'Hanlon, Crew members Ward Griffin & Peter Kelly carried out a textbook extraction in challenging conditions. Thankfully everyone involved was brought safely ashore. We would encourage anyone using a jet ski or other personal watercraft to always wear a suitable buoyancy aid or lifejacket, carry a means of communication and be aware of the local conditions before launching."

This time last year volunteer Martin Whittaker from the RNLI Heritage Team visited Tramore and met with representatives from Tramore Lifeboat RNLI, Tramore Development Trust and Waterford Council on our beautiful Doneraile Walk. Martin's visit helped uncover an interesting piece of our local history.

The collection box on the Doneraile Walk in Tramore was originally cast in 1885 by Preston and Bishop, Birmingham, as part of an RNLI fundraising project.

Walkers on the Doneraile may have noticed its absence in recent days.

Of the 300 boxes placed around Ireland and the UK, only 29 are known to survive today, with just two remaining in Ireland – one here in and the other in

With Martin's expertise, the support of Bernadette Guest at Waterford Council, Tramore Development Trust and the skilled work of Charlie Trigg in Lismore, this historic collection box is currently being restored to its original condition.

It's a small but important piece of Tramore's maritime heritage and a reminder of the generations who supported lifesaving around our coast.

We look forward to having the collection box back in its home on the Doneraile.

A huge thank you to Martin Whittaker for pursuing this project and to Waterford Council for supporting our local heritage.

It's hot here in Tramore! Please share our lifesaving advice to help us keep people safe 📢

With many enjoying the sun, we are asking you to remember one thing if you're by the water:

- Tilt your head back with your ears submerged

- Relax and try to breathe normally

- Move your hands and legs to help you stay afloat

- It’s OK if your legs sink, we all float differently

- Once your breathing is under control, call for help or swim to safety.

Enjoy and stay safe!

Float to Live could save your life.

If you’re struggling in the water, .

🛟 Remember it.
🛟 Practise it.
🛟 Share it.

It could save you or someone

It was a busy evening at the boathouse on Monday night!

We were happy to welcome and thank Fifi Ncube for her generous ongoing support of Tramore Lifeboat RNLI.

We're fortunate to have volunteer Peter Walter on crew. Peter is an expert Master Mariner with decades of experience at sea and a former lecturer in the National Maritime College. Big thanks to Peter for giving up his evenings to upskill our crew in areas of navigation.

Some of our local followers may have seen the remnants of a basking shark washed up between the Guillamene and the Pier last week.

While launching on a training exercise on Monday evening we met former RNLI crew member with Assistant Professor Taylor Chapple from the Big Fish Lab at Oregon State University, his son Huckleberry & Taylor's PHd student Maddie.

Taylor & Maddie are experts in the study of shark behaviour and took samples of the shark for scientific analysis. We wish them well with their continued research and thank them for sharing a little of their time & expertise with our crew.

All of us at Tramore Lifeboat RNLI are deeply saddened to hear of the tragic loss of two Marine Rescue volunteers in New South Wales, Australia.

We honour their courage and service.

This loss is a stark reminder of the risks faced by all who answer the call to rescue.

Our thoughts are with their families, friends, and crews at this incredibly difficult time.

May they Rest In Peace.

Last night was the darkest night ever experienced by Marine Rescue NSW.

Marine Rescue NSW volunteers answer the call for help 24/7 and last night six members from Marine Rescue Ballina did just that. They launched with a single mission, to save lives on the water and assist a yacht, reported to be in difficulty off the South Ballina break wall.

Tragically, two of our volunteers lost their lives during the response.

Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Todd Andrews said the devastating loss is a solemn reminder of the risks faced by volunteers who serve their communities.

“These two men were serving their local community and have made the ultimate sacrifice to help others.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of the deceased, their fellow crew members, the brave radio operators who handled the difficult communications during the incident, the entire Marine Rescue NSW family and the wider Ballina community during this incredibly difficult time.

“We are supporting our volunteers and their families through professional counselling and chaplaincy support.

“We ask that the privacy of those involved and their families be respected during this difficult time,” Commissioner Andrews said.
