CommunityK

CommunityK CommunityK provides services to deaf, deafened, hard of hearing & hearing customers with an interest in deaf/hard of hearing issues. Kerry, Ireland. Mr.

Drop-In Centre in Tralee, Co. We were previously known as KDRC (Kerry Deaf Resource Centre CLG). Community K was formally known as Kerry Deaf Resource Centre (KDRC). KDRC is a company limited by guarantee with charitable status (Charity No: CHY20854). CommunityK is a designated service provider for deaf, deafened, hard of hearing & hearing adults with an interest in deaf & hard of hearing issues.

(Please note: We are not a membership organisation). Services are provided on a request & appointment basis. The Centre was set-up & is managed by our General Manager & Founder, Mr. Willie White who is a graduate of the Centre for Deaf Studies (Bristol University/ Trinity College). White is a registered qualified Irish Sign Language (ISL) interpreter. He is also known as a CODA (a child of deaf adults) as both his parents were deaf. Mr White is supported by a Board of Directors which compromises of a fellow CODA/ISL interpreter, a deaf professional colleague, a freelance ISL interpreter, and a long term hearing supporter. Our service is partly funded by the Health Service Executive (HSE) along with a combination of private donations via street & Church collections. Shortfalls in funding occur every year, hence the need for private donations & public collections. Income from fundraising activities are critical to covering overhead and admin costs of the service. Our Centre in Tralee is open:
Monday: 10am-1pm & 2-4pm. Tuesday: 10am-1pm & 2-4pm. Wednesday: 10am-1pm & 2-4pm. Thursday: 10am-1pm & 2-4pm. To avail of services, we recommend that customers make appointments in advance. Our service receives limited funding and as a result, we only have one full time employee and a small team of part time staff. Therefore, making an appointment enables us to run the service more efficiently and smoothly. A designated appointment is especially important if customers have specific communication requirements and/or specialised enquiries. Please note: Our service does not receive any funding for night time or weekend work. Outside of office hours, ISL users can contact the Sign Language Interpreting Service (SLIS) and Bridge Interpreting if they have medical or legal emergencies. In addition, our Centre closes for the month of August & for two weeks for Christmas for annual leave. If you would like to support our work, we accept donations at our postal address below. Great news from our friends and colleagues in Northern Ireland on the passing of the Sign Language Bill. Years of campaigning have finally secured legal recognition of Irish Sign Language (ISL) and British Sign Language (BSL).

Well done and congratulations to everyone involved in the campaign.

The Irish Deaf Society warmly congratulates the Deaf community in Northern Ireland on the passing of the Sign Language Bill.

This is a historic moment for the recognition of both Irish Sign Language and British Sign Language in Northern Ireland.

This progress reflects many years of advocacy, community work and commitment from Deaf people, organisations, campaigners and supporters across Northern Ireland.

Recognition is important, but so too is practical access. We hope this Bill will lead to stronger access to public services, clearer responsibilities, and real improvements in everyday life for Deaf people.

Today belongs to the Deaf community in Northern Ireland. We send our congratulations and support on this important milestone.

Help Bring 'Paper Hearts' to Life — Your Support Matters

This project is just getting started, and sharing helps so much in the early days. Even if you can't donate, a quick share can help it reach people who may be able to support.

'Paper Hearts' is a heartfelt story set in 1990s Belfast about connection, understanding, and seeing each other beyond words. With only 6.67% of the £7,000 goal raised so far, your support can make a real difference in bringing this meaningful film to life.

Please consider sharing or donating if this project speaks to you — every bit of support helps us reach more people who care about stories that foster understanding and inclusion.
