Tipperary County Council’s Biodiversity Office has launched a new booklet - “Photographic Guide to Insects and Invertebrates of Tipperary” – a vibrant, fun-filled book designed to encourage children to explore the magical world of insects.

The booked was authored by Clonmel based photographer Neil Halligan, with the expert guidance Louise Garcia (Entomologist).
Packed with stunning photographs and facts on insects for key biodiversity sites throughout the County, with tips for spotting them in your garden, parks and walkways!

The book is available for free through the Library Service. Pick up a copy at your local library.

Congratulations to TUS Environmental Science student Jennifer Clancy on her winning entry in the Tipperary Festival of Science photo competition!

Our Tipperary Festival of Science "Science Eyes" winner is Jennifer Clancy with her entry of the photo of a zebra jumping spider.

Jennifer's photo offered a rare close-up look at Ireland's stunning zebra jumping spider, taken with her mobile phone. Per Jennifer, this native beauty of the Salticus genus is a natural form of pest control and should be appreciated like all our other native spider friends. Spiders play a critical role in many ecosystems, and they deserve recognition and our respect.

Jennifer's photo was a winner with our judges, and they observed;

"This winning photo with its focus on the spider’s eyes gives great character to the portrait. The spider seems to blend into the tree but yet shows the distinctive stripes of its common name. The photographer has a keen observational eye to spot this little creature of less than 1 cm length."

Congratulations to Jennifer from the judges, and all of the team here at the Tipperary Festival of Science and Mary Immaculate College, Ireland.
