In response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Irish government pledged to support the many Ukrainians having to flee their homeland for safety. By April, 20,000 refugees had arrived and local services were doing their best to meet the needs of these individuals who'd already been through so much. Watching the horrors unfold on our screens every day, so many of us wanted to d
o something to help. This committee was set up by Emer Irwin who brought together a team of dedicated community members (Mary, Ailish, Michal, Catherine & Kim) to prepare to welcome Ukrainians to Summerhill and the surrounding areas. The committee began by setting up partnerships with the local community to be able to meet the needs of the families upon arrival, sourcing available accommodation, organising transport and providing initial funds for groceries and other essentials. We are grateful to the Meals on Wheels for providing a space for weekly English classes, and to everyone who has pulled together to lend a hand in whatever way they can!
