We would like to make you aware of a disease affecting birds called trichomoniasis, otherwise known as canker. We have had many reports of this over the years and still getting them.
This disease is caused by the trichomonas Protozoa which is highly contagious amongst birds and spreads either by direct contact, infected parents feeding babies, contaminated food and water.
The disease affects the alimentary canal, back of throat and upper oesophagus causing lesions which get bigger until the bird cannot swallow food and eventually starves to death. A tell tale sign is food or debris stuck to the beak or neck and they will look fluffed up trying to keep warm. They may huddle in a corner and be slow to fly off.
The only thing that can be done to help stop the spread of this disease is to stop feeding for 6 weeks. The feeding area and containers must be cleaned and disinfected. If you keep feeding many more birds will be killed.
Pet birds can also be infected so it is advisable to wash hands thoroughly after handling outdoor feeders and containers before having contact with your birds.
There is no risk to humans from the trichomoniasis that birds contract.

On a happier note, a few months ago this little Robin was admitted following a cat attack. He was very poorly for a few days and lost a foot in the attack. Amazingly he survived and for the first time since his release has now been see twice. He has established his territory and is looking good 😊

This Jay is visiting us daily. Usually a shy and elusive bird so possibly a male gathering food to feed his mate 😊

Another Budgie joins our flock. Buddy, now out of quarantine, enjoys the company of new friends. Many hours are spent with these birds ensuring their well being. Different toys and challenges are given to keep them mentally stimulated and amused and they have a large safe environment where they can fly freely, keeping exercised while having a continuous party πŸŽ‰πŸ˜„

You can help the ground feeders by clearing an area of snow for them to access food. Very hungry chaps !

Our beautiful garden birds face huge challenges with storms and snow to find food and keep warm to survive cold nights. Please spare a thought for them by providing regular food and water that they can rely on 😊

Despite a cold strong wind yesterday, this little Robin was singing his heart out. When a strong gust came, undeterred, he turned his back on it and carried on his joyous song, reminding us that spring is just around the corner ☺️

At this time of the year our little feathered friends need all the help they can get to survive the cold nights. You can be a huge help by feeding consistently, keeping feeders and water containers really clean and food areas clear of built up debris to discourage unwanted visitors. This video shows how much and how often they need to feed. This is just one of many feeding stations at the sanctuary which are all as busy.
