This is the case here in County Sligo where classes are run by various branches. In Sligo town the Fred Finn Branch runs Saturday classes at Summerhill College with children given the opportunity to play on a wide variety of instruments – whistle, flute, fiddle, button accordion, concertina, bodhran, banjo and harp. Musical instrument tuition is augmented by classes in traditional singing. More details can be found at www.fredfinn.ie. For classes email [email protected]. For membership & grúpa cheoil email [email protected]

Classes are available at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels in all instruments. Classes are 40 minutes long and children are offered tuition in small groups, following a structured music programme. Young musicians are given the opportunity to join céilí bands and grupaí ceoil (music ensembles with up to 20 participants in 3 age groups). The branch also prepares children to participate in the SCT Exams (Scrúdu Ceol Tíre), which is a graded series of exams designed to take you as a musician from basic proficiency in tune-playing through to a mastery of the tradition. Instrument Rental:
The Fred Finn branch operates an instrument rental scheme for those attending classes, which provides access to children to some of the more expensive instruments. The instrument rental bank includes flutes, fiddles, accordions, concertinas, harps and uilleann pipes. Children often rent an instrument for one to two terms to try it out. Adult music classes:
Adult music classes are held on Thursday evenings. Adult classes cater to adults wishing to learn traditional music on several instruments (including tinwhistle, banjo, fiddle, flute etc). Classes are held for beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.
