πŸ¦… White-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) soaring over Sligo! This could very well be the best wildlife video I have ever recorded. It was unreal to see her again, thankfully in dry weather this time. Join me for these two minutes of absolute awe, admiring such a magnificent creature. The footage is completely unedited, just as I experienced it.

She was carrying something in her talons, either prey or a bit of food she'd scavenged, and pecking at it mid-flight. I couldn't quite make out what it was! Words always seem to fall short when describing an encounter like this. My hands are still shaking with excitement.

Thank you, nature. πŸ’š

πŸ–€ Air, earth, and water - a slightly more creative shot than usual! πŸ™‚ Black-and-white view of Queen Maeve's cairn on Knocknarea emerging from the low cloud, with the waters of Ballisodare Bay below. I think the gulls along the river add a lovely little touch of contrast!

🐦 A wren (Troglodytes troglodytes) hiding in the hedgerow. Despite weighing only about 10 to 12 grams (approximately the same as 2 teaspoons of sugar), the wren can sing at an astonishing volume up to 90 decibels: as loud as a lawnmower!

🐾 A brief encounter between a pine marten (Martes martes) and a badger (Meles meles) in the middle of the night. While the marten initially enjoys its snack unbothered, the natural instinct to run away kicks in the moment the badger approaches. Despite their reputation for being aggressive and "vicious", like all wild animals, their first response to a threat is to flee rather than fight, as long as they aren't cornered or trapped.

Both martens and badgers are members of the Mustelidae family, and they often share overlapping territories with minimal conflict and interactions. However, there is a clear size hierarchy: badgers can weigh up to a whopping 17 kg, making them significantly more dominant than the 1–2 kg pine marten.

πŸ› Spotting a pale tussock moth caterpillar (Calliteara pudibunda) is always an autumn highlight (at least for someone like me 😬)! Look out for these striking caterpillars crawling on the forest floor, especially in damp areas of deciduous woodland. They feature vivid warning colouration topped with dense tufts of hair, giving them a distinct "toothbrush" look. Complete with a long, pinkish tail tuft for good measure! Interestingly, the adult moth is less striking, trading these neon warning features and colours for a muted grey palette to blend into tree bark. A little warning: those beautiful hairs can cause mild skin irritation, so look but do not touch!

πŸŽ‰ A little bit of exciting news: this photo of a lovely skylark (Alauda arvensis) that I took over the summer has been selected to feature in Kildare Wildlife Rescue's 2027 calendar! I'm delighted to see it included alongside so many fantastic photos from all around Ireland. The calendar is now available to pre-order on their website. All proceeds contribute to the essential work of protecting and rehabilitating local wildlife. I also only just discovered that they are running a little competition over on their page: the photo with the most likes wins a day at a wildlife hide.

I'm about a week late, and there are some seriously brilliant photos in the running, so my chances are pretty slim. But if you'd like to give my skylark a boost with a like, I'll pop the link in the comments. Thank you so much! 😊

🌊 In life, we are often taught to look at the rock and see strength in standing still to absorb the blow. But I think the real power is in the water: a quiet, relentless shape-shifter that changes, adapts, and creates new paths without ever breaking itself.

🦑 A little too close for comfort? This badger got up close and personal with the trail camera, pausing for a little scratch session at the end! Time to check the lens for nose prints. 😬
