Gráinne O’ Brien and Liza O’ Driscoll are the supervisors on the Community Employment Scheme based in the Bank House in Ballydehob. This scheme has existed for 30 years and is vital for the functioning of many voluntary organisations along the Mizen Peninsula. There are currently nearly 50 people employed all over West Cork. To check eligibility to participate in the scheme contact Skibbereen Education and Environment Project.

May on the farm 🌼 The flowers of the ‘sceach gheal’ (white thorn) have quite a ‘musky’ fragrance. The small red berries (haws) are an important food source for wildlife: in hungrier times both leaves and haws were also eaten by people, referred to as ‘bread and butter’. Ballydehob Tidy Towns is hosting a meeting to discuss ideas on how we can improve and expand the floral decorations around our village. Flowers and planting play a big role in making Ballydehob look vibrant and welcoming, and we’d love to hear your ideas!

Everyone is welcome to come along, share suggestions, and help us plan for an even more colourful Ballydehob this year. Whether you’re a keen gardener or simply someone who loves seeing the village looking its best, your input would be greatly appreciated.
