Timebank Ireland

Timebank Ireland A timebank facilitates the exchange of skills among its members based on time rather than money.

Timebanking is simple: one hour of help earns one time credit. One hour of gardening, tutoring, lift-giving, admin help, repair advice, digital support, or companionship is valued equally. It is a practical way to build community without turning every act of care into a cash transaction.

Representing Cork and Cavan, Ireland Timebank Ireland alongside Jasper Ford and Sridevi Balan representing Directors of TimeBank Ireland , we felt both honoured and deeply encouraged by the positive impact this movement continues to create worldwide.

Timebanking at its core, it is a community-driven system where people exchange skills, services, and support using time as the currency.

One hour of help given earns one time credit, which can then be exchanged for support from others. This approach fosters equality, inclusivity, and a strong sense of belonging values that are increasingly important in today’s fast-paced world.

Throughout the discussions, it became clear how widely Timebanking is being embraced as a free and accessible tool to strengthen communities. From supporting vulnerable individuals to encouraging social connection and reducing isolation.

Timebanks are helping to rebuild trust and reciprocity in meaningful ways. The global perspectives shared during the event highlighted innovative uses of Timebanking, from local neighbourhood initiatives to larger collaborative networks that span cities and countries.

As members of Timebank Ireland, we are proud to be part of this growing global family. The experience reaffirmed our belief that small acts of kindness, when multiplied across communities, can create powerful change.

We return feeling motivated, optimistic, and truly blessed to contribute to a movement that values people over profit and connection over competition.

Global Federation: Connecting Timebanks Worldwide
This is where it gets exciting.

We're actively developing a Federation API designed to connect Project NEXUS with other timebanking platforms around the world. The vision is simple but ambitious: a global time bank where external federation partners can discover each other, exchange services, and trade time credits across platforms and across borders.

Imagine a member in Dublin helping someone in SΓ£o Paulo with web design, while a member in Tokyo teaches Irish students origami β€” all through interconnected timebanking platforms, all valuing every hour equally.

The Federation API will enable:

Cross-platform discovery β€” Find members and services on partner timebanking platforms globally
Interoperable time credit exchange β€” Trade time credits between different timebanking systems seamlessly
External federation partnerships β€” Any timebanking platform worldwide can connect to the network via standardized API endpoints
Global marketplace β€” A unified view of offers and requests spanning multiple platforms and communities
Trust & verification β€” Federated reputation and review systems that travel with members across platforms
This isn't just about connecting NEXUS communities to each other β€” it's about building the open infrastructure for a worldwide timebanking economy. We're inviting timebanking platforms, community currency projects, and mutual aid networks everywhere to join us in defining this standard together.

Why Open Source?
Because transformative technology should be accessible to everyone.

Communities around the world deserve tools that respect their autonomy, protect their data, and adapt to their needs. By going open source under AGPL-3.0, we're ensuring that Project NEXUS remains:

βœ… Free forever β€” No vendor lock-in, no surprise fees
βœ… Transparent β€” Every line of code is visible and auditable
βœ… Customizable β€” Fork it, modify it, make it yours
βœ… Community-driven β€” Shape the roadmap, contribute features, fix bugs together
And by building the Federation API as an open standard, we're ensuring that no single platform controls the global timebanking network. The protocol belongs to everyone.

The Future is Community-Owned β€” and Globally Connected
For too long, community platforms have been controlled by corporations optimizing for profit over people. And for too long, timebanking communities have operated in isolation, unable to connect with kindred communities across the world.

Project NEXUS is different. It's built by the community, for the community, owned by everyone. And with the Federation API, we're building the bridges that will connect timebanks into a truly global network β€” where every hour is equal, no matter where in the world it's given.

Today, we're not just releasing software. We're releasing a blueprint for how communities can thrive in the digital age β€” together, across every border.

Welcome to Project NEXUS. Welcome home.

Paying it Forward: Neighbours helping Neighbours and the West Cork Timebank helping to achieve it

From a small charity shop in Skibbereen to a growing digital platform with international attention, West Cork’s hOur Timebank is showing how simple acts of kindness can strengthen communities, reduce isolation, and remind people of the value they have to offer one another.

At its heart, timebanking is beautifully simple. Instead of money, people exchange time. An hour spent helping someone paint a kitchen, tidy a garden, or learn a new skill becomes an hour of credit that can later be used in return β€” perhaps for a guitar lesson, help with weeding, or support with another everyday task. It is a system built on mutual respect, reciprocity, and the belief that everyone’s time has equal value.

For years, hOur Timebank has been quietly building connections across West Cork. Founded by Jasper Ford and Mary Casey, the organisation began with a local, hands-on approach, often connecting people through a time broker who matched members’ needs with the skills others could offer. Now, with the launch of a new online platform, that same spirit of neighbourly support is being brought into a new era.

The digital platform allows members to log in, list the help they can offer, browse other people’s listings, and redeem time credits in a much more direct and accessible way. While the technology is new, the values behind it are not. The goal remains the same: to bring people together, open up new volunteering opportunities, and make it easier for people to both give and receive support.

Even in its early stages, the results have been striking. In just two months of operation, the platform had already attracted more than 200 active members and facilitated around 1,300 hours of volunteering. Jasper Ford described the level of activity as greater than anything he had seen in the previous 12 years, a sign that the model is resonating strongly with people and that the need for community connection remains as urgent as ever.

What makes the story even more powerful is that, while the platform is now drawing interest from organisations in the UK, America, and Switzerland, West Cork remains firmly at its centre. This is not a story about technology for technology’s sake. It is a story about local people helping local people, and about creating a model of community care that begins at home and can inspire others elsewhere.

The social value of that work has already been measured. A study carried out by West Cork Development Partnership found that for every €1 invested in hOur Timebank, €16 in social value was generated. It also found that 95% of participants felt more socially connected, while 100% reported improved wellbeing. Those figures point to something many people in communities already know instinctively: when neighbours support one another, the benefits ripple far beyond the immediate exchange.

Mary Casey has seen those ripple effects firsthand. She recalls the many projects volunteers carried out together, from gardens to polytunnels, but one memory stands out above all: helping a woman install a bee house that she would never have been physically able to create alone. For that woman, it was the fulfilment of a dream. For the volunteers, it was more than a task completed β€” it was a shared moment of kindness, conversation, and human connection over soup and sandwiches afterwards.

That is the real beauty of timebanking. It is not only about getting practical help done. It is about restoring confidence, giving people a sense of purpose, and creating friendships between people who may otherwise never have crossed paths. As Mary puts it, even one hour of volunteering each month can make a difference β€” not just to the person receiving help, but to the volunteer too.

There is also something deeply empowering in the idea that everyone has something worthwhile to contribute. Timebanking reminds people that their skills, their care, and even a single hour of their time can matter greatly to someone else. In a world where so many people experience loneliness, exclusion, or the feeling that they have little to offer, that message carries enormous weight.

Looking ahead, the vision is both local and ambitious. hOur Timebank hopes to work with more organisations and institutions, and to build a future where volunteering and time credits become part of everyday life β€” perhaps even linked with local cinemas, exhibitions, attractions, and wider community initiatives, as has already happened in parts of the UK.

Yet for all the excitement around the digital platform and its future possibilities, the heart of the project remains profoundly human. Technology may help connect people more quickly and more widely, but the real achievement lies in what happens next: neighbours helping neighbours, communities drawing closer together, and ordinary acts of generosity quietly transforming lives. That is what West Cork Timebank is helping to achieve.

Hi Everyone,

It is finally here.

After a lot of hard work, late nights, and anticipation, I am absolutely thrilled to announce that the massive update to the Timebank Ireland website is officially live.

We didn't just polish the old siteβ€”we reimagined it. We wanted to build a platform that is as vibrant, generous, and dynamic as the members who use it.

But here is the catch: We have built a beautiful new "house," but a house isn't a home until the family moves in.

The technology is ready, but the real engine of Timebank Ireland is you.

I need your help to bring this new space to life. We have created a brand new section specifically for Offers and Requests, designed to make exchanging time smoother and more intuitive than ever before. Right now, it’s a blank canvas waiting for your personality and skills.

Here is your mission for today:
Sign In: Come see the new look. [Link to Website Login]
Post One Offer: What is one thing you love doing that could help a neighbor? Cooking? Gardening? Graphic Design? A friendly chat?
Post One Request: Don’t be shy! What is one thing you’ve been putting off that a fellow member could help you with?
Why do this now? Because the first offers and requests set the tone for the entire community. By posting today, you aren't just using the website; you are shaping the culture of the new Timebank Ireland.
I am so excited to see this area fill up with the incredible talent and generosity I know this group possesses.

Let’s get the time currency flowing.

Thanks for reading. See you soon!

Jasper
