Patroness of the Order of Malta

Today, on the birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Order of Malta worldwide venerates Our Blessed Lady under the title "Our Lady of Philermos", after the famous icon of that name which was discovered by the Order on Mount Philermos in Rhodes.

The Icon was taken to Malta after the loss of Rhodes, and then, believed to have taken by the last Grand Master of the Order on the island of Malta, Fra. Ferdinand von Hompesch to Italy and then possibly Russia, but the Icon today is housed in the National Museum of Montenegro.

Today, the 8th September, is Our Lady's principal feast day within the Order.

Happy feast day to all the members, volunteers, and supporters of the Order.

Our Volunteers joined statutory and voluntary organisation across the region at the National Services Day - Ireland parade in Limerick City.

National Services Day was established to commemorate, and honor Ireland’s frontline, emergency, security, defence, and voluntary services.

Thanks to all our Volunteers who supported and attended todays event.

The unit travelled to Knock, along with units, Knights, chaplains and guests from across the country for the Order of Malta National Pilgrimage to Our Lady's Shrine at Knock.

We were deligted to be joined by a number guests from the town including the Sisters from the Mercy Convent in Shannon.

Thanks to all our members for supporting this major community duty.

This Sunday, August 30th, we look forward to welcoming the Order of Malta National pilgrimage to Knock Shrine.

Founded in 1938, Order of Malta Ireland is a voluntary organisation serving communities and reaching out to the most vulnerable and disadvantaged.

We are deeply concerned by the news coming from Nepal. Following severe flash floods yesterday, around 1,500 people are reported missing. In the affected Nuwakot and Rasuwa districts, we have temporarily paused our project activities. 💔

Together with our partner organizations Rural Self-reliance Development Centre - RSDC​ and Koshish.कोशिश​, we have been supporting rural communities to strengthen their resilience to crises.

All colleagues from our partner organizations are safe. Currently, they are preparing a detailed assessment of the situation and determining the need for assistance.🙏

We know many of our are eagerly getting their results from 10am today. Wishing you all the best of luck and we in your Order of Malta family are very proud of you!

Getting this far is a HUGE achievement in itself, many of your school years were impacted by COVID lockdowns and disruption so you should be very, very proud of yourself no matter what your results are!

Remember, these results are just a snapshot in time and if you didn't get what you expected or wanted there are lots of options from appeals to apprenticeships, work or a different course. Talk to your teachers, parents/guardians, and friends about any worries you have!
