Ireland Chapter of Women in Aviation International (WAI) proudly hosted Girls in Aviation Day 2025 welcoming young women and girls from across the country to discover the exciting world of aviation.

This year’s event was generously sponsored by Stellaer 212 and ASG along with Shannon Aviation Museum whose support helped bring a unique hands-on aviation experience to Ireland’s next generation of pilots, engineers, and aviation professionals.

GIAD 25 saw 46 young women take part in a day filled with interactive workshops, museum tours, and mentoring opportunities with some even getting a chance to get aboard the Stellaer PC12 which flew down especially to be with us. With 31 female leaders working in every corner of the aviation industry — from airline pilots and air traffic controllers to aerospace engineers and maintenance specialists this was a unique day to connect for both the girls and the volunteers.

Thank you to everyone who gave their time and goodwill to this unique day and thank you to the companies who helped to top up their WAI GIAD Goodie bags to capacity Aercap, elfc, SES, ASL, Irish Air Corps!

Isobel Rutland displayed her P51 Mustang at Bray Air Display 2025. She is a qualified accountant who started flying in 2016 and now holds and ATPL and was the 2023 Standard National Aerobatics Champion in the UK. She flies many different aircraft types such as the T-6 Texan and the Pitts Special, and is an instructor on the Cirrus! While Isobel isn’t available to join us this year in Shannon Aviation Museum for GIAD2025, she hopes the day is a great success. Isobel encourages all the girls to follow their dreams, no matter what they are.

Attending Girls in Aviation Day (GIAD) as a volunteer last year was an incredible privilege and an experience I’ll cherish. It was truly inspiring to engage with so many bright, ambitious young girls who are just beginning to explore the possibilities within the aviation industry.

Having the opportunity to share my own journey and speak openly about the various paths into this field was a real honour. I wanted them to leave with the understanding that there is no single route into aviation — and that their unique backgrounds, interests, and strengths are valuable assets in shaping their careers.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the day was knowing that even a brief conversation might spark confidence or curiosity in someone just starting out. My only wish is that I had been able to attend something like GIAD when I was younger — not just for the inspiration, but to see first-hand the breadth of opportunities available to women in this industry.

GIAD is more than just an event — it’s a powerful platform for connection, encouragement, and empowerment. I’m grateful to have been a part of it and hopeful that it left a lasting impression on those who attended
