🌿 begins this Friday! 🌿

may have just wrapped up, but our landscape, its heritage and the connections running through it are with us all year round!

This fits very naturally with our work, bringing together those who live, work and recreate in the uplands, and recognising that features such as hedgerows are much more than boundaries. They connect habitats and landscapes, support farming and biodiversity, protect water and soils, build climate resilience and form an important part of our cultural heritage and sense of place.

National Hedgerow Week, a partnership between and the , celebrates these many roles and will feature articles, resources and events throughout the week.

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council is holding a Mattress Amnesty Day at Ballyogan Recycling Park: 📅 Saturday, 5 September ⏰ 9.30am–5.30pm

A simple opportunity to clear out unwanted mattresses while helping to prevent illegal dumping and protect our environment.

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council is a valued partner in the , the multi-stakeholder initiative tackling illegal dumping across the Wicklow and Dublin Uplands.

Every initiative that makes it easier for people to dispose of waste responsibly is welcome. There is never a good reason for waste to end up in our Uplands, forests or countryside.

We got it all on our Heritage Walk! 🌿

Natural, built, social heritage, archaeology, farming, family, politics, romance, and a little Irish weather thrown in.

Our Heritage Week walk up Newtown Hill Archaeology & Sheepdogs in Glencullen, led by father-and-son duo Philip and Daniel Maguire, captured much of what Wicklow Uplands Council is about: people, place, partnership and a living landscape.

Even as we gathered and talked about looking after one another and respecting the land, we were greeted by the unmistakable call of the curlew, you couldn't have scripted it better.

From there, we meandered through dry stone walls and old field systems, hearing the personal history of the Maguire family and their generations on this land. Philip and Daniel then brought us further back in time through the early medieval period and the Vikings, the Bronze and Stone Ages, the Beaker people, Neolithic and Mesolithic communities, right back to hunter-gatherers and a landscape shaped by ice.

It was a terrific blend, delivered with knowledge, humour poetry and genuine passion.

The evening was a great reminder that heritage doesn't sit neatly in separate boxes. Natural, built and social heritage overlap, people have shaped this landscape for thousands of years, just as the landscape has shaped the people who live and work within it.

A big thank you also to for use of their car park as our meeting point, with a few returning afterwards for a pint and a warming bowl of soup. Local businesses, landowners, communities and organisations supporting one another is all part of keeping our uplands vibrant.

A sincere thank you to Philip and Daniel for sharing their knowledge, passion and connection to this living landscape and 5,000 years of stories beneath our feet.

🐑 Wicklow Sheep Farmers – UCD wants to hear from you

Sheep worrying continues to be a serious concern for farmers, affecting animal welfare, farm livelihoods and the wellbeing of those who care for their flocks.

UCD School of Veterinary Medicine is carrying out a Sheep Worrying Study in Wicklow to build a clearer picture of the issue. They want to hear from all sheep farmers, whether you have experienced sheep worrying recently or not.

The survey takes ~5 minutes, and every response will help strengthen the evidence and understanding around sheep worrying in Wicklow. 📱 Scan the QR code on the poster to take part.

Please share with sheep farmers across Wicklow and help get as broad a response as possible.

Stone, skills and a landscape shaped by generations.

last weekend, the Dry Stone Wall Association of Ireland, facilitated by Wicklow Uplands Council, delivered a handson Workshop at the Vartry as part of .

Dry stone walls are much more than boundaries. They are part of Wicklow’s cultural heritage and our sense of place, while also providing valuable habitat and ecological connectivity. Their open structure allows air and water to move through them, helping them respond naturally to changing weather conditions and contributing, in their own small but important way, to a more resilient landscape.

A great weekend of , shared knowledge, partnership and practical conservation, keeping an important part of Wicklow’s living heritage alive.
