FURZE: Fuel, Fodder, Thatch, Tools, Toys

This July, join artist Shane Finan at for a unique exploration of one of Wicklow's most familiar yet often overlooked plants: furze.

Known elsewhere as gorse, whin, aiteann or ulex, furze has shaped rural life for centuries. Once carefully cultivated and valued, it provided fuel, fodder, thatch, tools, toys and much more. Today, it is often dismissed as a w**d, but its rich cultural heritage tells a very different story.

Drawing on years of research and hands-on experimentation, Shane's new installation and workshop programme explores the traditional skills, technologies and folklore associated with furze. Through practices including thatching, hedge laying, wattling, charcoal-making and natural pigment production, participants will discover the remarkable relationship between people, place and this iconic upland plant.

SAVE THE DATES 📍 Knockree Youth Hostel, Co. Wicklow 📅 3–5 July 2026 - Registration and Tickets later in June, we will keep you updated!

Presented in partnership with Mermaid County Wicklow Arts Centre and supported by Wicklow Uplands Council, and An Óige. Come and experience the hidden stories, craft traditions and living heritage of furze in the Wicklow Uplands.
