When a child loses a sibling, their grief can look very different from what we expect.
Sometimes it is tears. Sometimes it is silence. Sometimes it is laughter.
Whatever it looks like, their grief matters.
Jacinta's Smile supports bereaved siblings and young people across Ireland.
Follow us and help us reach more families.

When a child loses a brother or sister, their grief can look very different. 🤍

They may feel sad, angry, confused — or sometimes they may seem completely fine.
There is no “right” way for a child to grieve.

A few things that can help:
🤍 Let them talk about their brother or sister.
🤍 Answer their questions honestly, using words they can understand.
🤍 Reassure them that their feelings are normal.
🤍 Keep familiar routines where possible.
🤍 Give them space to grieve in their own way and in their own time.
🤍 Remind them that they are loved, safe and not alone.

Most importantly, listen without trying to fix their grief.
