Community Radio is THE PLACE for ACCESS, ACCENTS, AGENCY, ADVOCACY and ACTION

On volunteer-run community radio, there’s room for people with all kinds of accents – but it’s rare to move beyond that.

Craol would like to offer our congratulations to everyone at Ros FM on securing and signing a new ten-year license with Coimisiún na Meán. This is a huge milestone for the station and a testament to the commitment, resilience, and professionalism of the entire team.

The successful outcome reflects the hard work behind the scenes, and these efforts were clearly instrumental in bringing the application to completion.
David Creighton Ros fm Manager had the following to share
"This new ten-year license is a massive achievement and a strong vote of confidence in Ros FM’s role as a vital community broadcaster. Well done to all involved—this is community radio at its best, and we wish you continued success over the next decade and beyond" He went on to thank their Chairperson Bernie Kearney by saying "Ros Fm has come back stronger then ever, but none of which would have been possible if not for one man " Bernie " he simple does not know the meaning of giving up, no matter how big the problem and he deserves extraordinary credit for his own personal commitment to the station"

The Craol team will be looking forward to working with you and wish you all the best for the next 10 years.

10/11/2025

Craol would like to wish Michael D Higgins a long and happy retirement as he prepares to depart Áras an Uachtaráin, on behalf of the entire community-radio sector we wish to express our profound gratitude for his long standing friendship, support and vision.
From his time as Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht, he championed the growth of community broadcasting in Ireland.
In a message marking National Community Radio Day in 2021 he recalled that “it is now over 25 years since I, as the first Minister… approved the issue of 11 licenses for community radio stations” That milestone laid a cornerstone for community voices across towns and villages to be heard.

More recently and just ahead of our celebrations for National Community Radio day in June 2025, we received a pre-recorded message from President Michael D Higgins, it was an honour to air the President's words live during this special event, it was appreciated by both participants and listeners alike.

His leadership in those years also included the lifting of the Section 31 Broadcasting Ban in 1994, affirming the principles of participation, representation and the free flow of ideas in our media landscape.

Thanks to President Michael D Higgins for his foresight, as community radio in Ireland has grown into a vibrant sector — serving localities, giving voice to under-represented communities, and strengthening the fabric of civil society. As he moves on from the Áras, we remember him as a special friend to community radio: a trail-blazer, a supporter, and a believer in the power of local voices.

With our warmest best wishes for the next chapter.
