The third day of the Irish Peatland Society International Peatland Society conference 2026 was held earlier this week, 10th June. For the IPCC it was another example of peatland learning, engagement and networking. This conference day focused on the theme peatlands and energy. Delegates visited Mount Lucas wind farm. Established in 2014 this wind farm has 28 turbines producing electricity to supply 50,000 homes. As an established wind farm the delegates were also shown the emerging ecology of the peatland with Round leaved wintergreen (Pyrola rotundifolia) now present on the site.

It was then onto another peatland and renewal energy site, Timahoe North Solar Farm with 200,000 panels (also known as modules) this 70 mega watt farm can supply 18,000 homes with renewal electricity. As this peatland site stopped peat harvesting in the 1980's the group were also shown how emerging fen habitat and vegetation is present on the site which is being managed for biodiversity.

It was then back to the conference headquarters for the final conference plenary which included an expert panel of peatland representatives from government departments, semi state agencies, international delegates and farmers to share their thoughts on the conference experiences and for conference delegates to also bring forward questions and share their thoughts.

This was the final day of the Irish Peatland Society International conference 2026 and as all delegates return to their usual everyday the IPCC will remember this conference for the comprehensive peatland discussions, knowledge and experience shared between peatland custodians, managers and researchers from both national and international government agencies, non-governmental and community groups and individuals.

The IPCC were invited to join of the Irish Peatland Society organising committee for the Irish Peatland Society International Peatland Society conference 2026. We were tasked with co-ordinating the poster session which aimed to bring peatland researchers, managers and custodians together to share their work and research on peatlands from Ireland and internationally. The poster session was held on Tuesday evening the 9th June with 48 posters presented to conference delegates from 10 countries. Poster themes ranged from peatlands and agriculture, climate change, community engagement, culture, biodiversity, policy, restoration, renewable energy and, paludiculture. With support from through their Heritage Grant Scheme the IPCC Conservation and Education Officers shared their work monitoring the use of micropropagated Sphagnum moss supporting restoration of Girley Bog NHA. The IPCC extend a special thanks to all who took part in this poster session from home and abroad including, but not limited to, , ,, .leinster, @, , , Ethos - Everything Tyrrellspass Has, On Show, .

Another wonderful day of peatland learning and networking on Day 2 of the Irish Peatland Society International Peatland Society conference 2026. On Tuesday conference participants visited Ballyfin Commonage, Co. Laois and met with representatives and landowners working and involved in Here the group learned of the practical actions being taken by landowners for this wet heath habitat to support agriculture, biodiversity and carbon sequestration and how the use of drone technology is helping to survey and monitor these large upland areas.

Then it was on to the Ridge of Capard, Slieve Bloom Mountains with representatives from and sharing their work restoring habitat for the Hen Harrier. Representatives from and also shared with delegates their work on developing requirements for blanket bog restoration.

After another busy day of peatland learning and networking in the field it was back to the conference headquarters for an evening peatland poster session...

Today the Irish Peatland Conservation Council attended the first day of the Irish Peatland Society 2026 .peatland.society conference. This conference is being attended by over 120 participants from sixteen countries.

Over three days, together we will be exploring peatland themes including rehabilitation, restoration, energy, climate, agriculture and biodiversity. Today following a welcome address and opening of the conference by John Feehan and Minister for Transport and Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment, Darragh O'Brien TD conference attendees made their way to the first peatland site visit, Cloncrow Bog (New Forest) NHA, Co. Westmeath.

Here we met with Elena Aitova of who shared her work measuring greenhouse gas emissions, from Fernando Fernandez and Therese Kelly shared the diversity of restoration measurements undertaken to date on this reserve and finally Eugene Dunbar from Ethos - Everything Tyrrellspass Has, On Show discussed this community groups action for their local bog creating a village trial and their passion for the biodiversity which included an army of emperor moth caterpillars.

A visit to Clonmacnoise monastic site was the next stop of the day with participants learning more of the geography of Ireland at this early Christian monastic site with beautiful views over the River Shannon.

The final stop of the day participants met with staff Doreen, Hannah and Chris at Derrybrat, Co. Offaly. Doreen shared their work rehabilitating cutaway peatland habitat across 75 sites covering an area of over 24,500ha under the Peatlands Climate Action Scheme. Hannah shared her experience of monitoring carbon emissions and the reductions observed and Chris shared details of the rehabilitation of this shallow peat site with wildlife observations including Marsh Pennywort (Hydrocotyle vulgaris) and Cottongrasses (Eriophorum angustifolium).

The group concluded the day with an evening of networking at

As National Biodiversity Week came to a close, the IPCC partook in an event hosted by the Irish Uplands Form (IUF), a tour of a Hill farm in Monour, County Tipperary.

The farm is situated on a low ridge which is noted as an outlier of the Galtee Mountains, with the main area of the visit focusing on a section of the farm that is part of a Special Area of Conservation - SAC number 002257. The talk was led by the owners and ecologist, Dr Mary Tubridy, a cousin of the owners. The visit focuses on examining dry and wet heath habitats that are being managed under the Farm Management Plan funded by National Parks and Wildlife Service.

While out on the site we observed a number of wild flowers found on peaty soils such as - 1. Heath Milkwort; 2. Lousewort; and 3. Tormentil.

For National Biodiversity Week 2026, the Irish Peatland Conservation Council in conjunction with the Native Woodland Trust hosted a "Where Bog and Woodland Meet: Girley Bog Walk and Talk" πŸŒ²πŸ’§

We enjoyed a guided walk with IPCC staff and the Native Woodland Trust around Girley Bog NHA, which was purchased by both groups to conserve this Natural Heritage Area. Both groups shared information about the bog and woodlands, their importance, conservation and restoration of native woodland and peatlands.

While out on the reserve and boardwalk, we got to observe some beautiful wildflowers, such as Herb Robert - a lovely pink flowering plant that is plentiful at this time of year. As well as a beautiful bogland plant - Common Cottongrass, that is starting to produce its lovely white cotton tufts.

Throughout National Biodiversity Week, the IPCC also hosted its own events. "Lodge Bog Walk and Talk" was the first event the IPCC held, but due to very wet weather, we opted for an indoor tour of the Peatland Exhibition at the Bog of Allen Nature Centre 🌧

Our second event hosted at the centre, was the fantastic "Butterflies of Lullymore West" πŸ¦‹ We got to take a walk down to Lullymore West Nature Reserve, where we got a chance to see some butterflies, and luckily we escaped the rain!

While on our walk we got to observe a Small tortoiseshell, two Orange-tip butterflies, a Brimstone, and a couple of Small Whites! Not only did we see butterflies but we also got to observe a number of dragonflies and damselflies. And on our walk back from the reserve, we also did some wildflower identification 🌸 It was a fantastic day, and we are so grateful for everyone who showed up to learn!

Last week we had a fantastic National Biodiversity Week, and now we just want to reflect on all the events the IPCC got to host and attend last week 🌿

Last Saturday, the IPCC were delighted to host the Kildare Bat Group for one of their National Biodiversity Week Events. Kildare Bat Group hosted their "Mad About Bats" event here at the Bog of Allen Nature Centre, and we were introduced to our 9 resident bat species here in Ireland, their habitats, biology, and the environmental challenges they face πŸ¦‡

Kildare Bat Group even had some lovely fruit laid out in the shape of a bat for the special day!
