We're looking for a little bit of assistance: Our e-car charger has been up and running for a few months now and we want to spread the word that is available, working and easy to use. It is listed on the map provided by the installers - www.easygo.ie and we have added it to www.plugshare.ie but we would love to know what are the main apps/sites that show a comprehensive list of chargers around the country? If you are in a position to add our details to any such apps/maps please feel free to do so, it would be greatly appreciated.

For anyone dropping this way to charge their car please note that there is a beautiful looped walk taking in the banks of the Ballyfinboy river -and also free high speed broadband in the digital hub.

Just two sessions remaining in our Digital Skills in the Community programme. If you haven't yet attended and wish to do so please feel free to drop in tomorrow morning anytime between 11.00am and 12.00 noon. No need to book, or stay for the whole session, if you have a question hopefully one of our 3 volunteers will be able to help. If you know of someone that may benefit from this please pass on the word. We have had four lovely sessions to date, a very relaxed atmosphere with attendees generally working one to one with a volunteer.

30/05/2024

Our Digital Skills for the Community will continue Friday next May 31st. These drop in sessions are open to anyone who wishes to attend for just 10 mins or the full hour! A number of volunteers will be on hand to help with questions or issues you may have on the basic use of your digital device. There is no need to book, just drop in.

One of the topics that has arisen a number of times to date is how to avoid being scammed online. We are planning to run a dedicated session on this very shortly and will post updates here.

Introducing "Digital Skills for the Community"

Commencing on Friday May 17th and running for 6 weeks Ballinderry Digital Hub is delighted to launch this brand new pilot programme. Members of the community who would like to learn a little more about using their own particular digital device (phone/laptop/tablet) are invited to drop in to the pavilion in Ballinderry between 11.00am and 12 noon on Fridays commencing May 17th. A number of volunteers have recently undertaken training and at least two will be on hand each Friday for the 6 week pilot programme. This will be very casual, not a formal class, where a cup of tea will be served as you sit with a volunteer and learn something new about using your particular device. There is no need to register for the service but if you require more information please phone (087) 2044324.
As those who may benefit most from this may not be on social media perhaps you could pass this information on to a family member, friend who you think may be interested.

Please share this post to help spread the word across our community.

Volunteers Needed.

Since the establishment of Ballinderry Digital Hub a number of very successful initiatives have taken place. Through the ETB a really useful smartphone technology course was run before Christmas. Over the past 6 weeks, with assistance from our Local Enterprise Office, a coding programme has been run for primary school children and their parents.

For our next initiative we are hoping to run the "Hi Digital" programme, an initiative from ALONE and Active Retirement Ireland. The aim of this will be to ensure that none of our citizens are being left behind when it comes to integrating technology into their daily lives. It will include areas such as booking tickets, online shopping and pursuing a hobby online.

To make it happen however we need 2 to 3 volunteers who would be willing to give approximately one hour per week for a few weeks to help deliver the programme, full training will be provided. The ultimate goal is that a meeting would take place one morning per week for about 6 weeks where participants could drop in to the facility, have a cup of tea and a chat and pick up at least one new skill! Volunteers do not need to be highly skilled themselves, simply using technology in your daily lives would be more than enough. The facility will be equipped with a laptop and a printer and activities that could be undertaken could be such as:

Purchasing a bus, rail or airplane ticket.
Taxing a car/applying for an NCT test.
Booking a hotel.
Online shopping.

If you, or someone you know, might be interested in volunteering or if you would simply like more information please phone or text Mike Molamphy (087) 2044324.

Please note volunteering/participating in this programme is not limited to those living in the immediate area, everyone welcome!

Some updates on the goings on in recent times:

Over four weeks in the runup to Christmas a course in smartphone technology was run by the ETB for a local community group. Many thanks to all who attended and to Philip, the ETB tutor, for making the course so relevant and enjoyable.

Since late January we have been running the Our Kids Code programme - this is a collaborative initiative between Trinity College, Dublin and Science Foundation Ireland. This is taking place on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings with 11 families involved. It has been great to see the participation, enjoyment and learning with some wonderful technology projects emerging.

Remote door access and an online booking system has also been setup for the facility. Many thanks to our Local Enterprise Office for their support for these upgrades.

We will shortly be organising an open evening that may be suited to those working remotely who may wish to view the facility. We will have an update on this as soon as a date has been fixed.

As part of the ongoing development of our digital hub we are delighted to announce that we will shortly be running Digital Literacy Classes for anyone interested. These will focus on getting the most out of your smartphone and look at activities such as downloading and using popular and useful apps, booking tickets online, etc. It is planned to run these classes for 4 weeks on Thursday afternoons commencing on Thursday November 23rd. If interested and if you have any questions, please phone (087) 2044324 for more information.

Given the nature of these classes it is possible that those most interested may not use Facebook, so If you know of anyone that may be interested please pass on this information.

Since we posted news of the development of our digital hub we have been delighted with the response, from people wishing to use the facility on a casual basis for work to groups interested in using the facility for educational purposes.

Over the coming weeks we will be offering a range of classes, at a variety of levels, relating to digital skills. These will be advertised here, through local media and also sent out through various WhatsApp groups. We are anxious to meet whatever demand is in the community for classes in digital skills so please let us know through our email address [email protected] if you have any suggestions.

We also have a dream... we would love to install a soundproof pod (photographed below) to allow users of the facility make private calls, attend virtual meetings etc while working from the hub. Funding for the facility doesn't extend to this type of investment but if anyone knows of one that isn't being used (apparently they are out there!)....we would be delighted to give it a good home!

Ballinderry Digital Hub is now open for business with a range of facilities to ensure that high speed broadband is available to anyone that needs it. This government backed facility offers easy to access high speed broadband, a number of work stations with desks and office chairs and a large interactive smart TV. The recently revamped building also includes modern kitchen facilities.

Access to the building is app based and once installed and registered, by a member of the commitee, will allow users easy access on a 24 hour basis.

The premises also has a recently installed e-car charging facility and external electrical sockets for anyone wishing to charge their e-bike (with your own charger).

Over the next few months it is proposed to run a number of classes in relation to digital technology and ultimately provide a focal point for meet ups for those working from home or for short classes on a variety of areas to help embrace technology for the benefit of businesses and community alike.

Please share this post to help us spread the word about this exciting new initiative for this area and please get in touch if you have any ideas on how this facility may be of benefit in any way.
