Artist and Sculptor Vincent Browne (1947-2026) who sculpted the statue of Seamus Ennis in Naul village, the ‘Tree of Life’ sculpture at the Blanchardstown council offices and other works such as ‘Mr Screen’ and ‘Palm Tree’ in Dublin City Centre, passed away on the 5th of August.

Some of you may remember a talk was given to primary school students at Naul National School 25 years ago, whilst the statue was being made, in which the artist explained how Séamus’s own shoes were used to model the sculpture.

What a lovely tribute to Séamus Ennis and gift to the community in Naul.

Interesting piece by Tiernan Gaffney on the role of traditional crafts in Modern Ireland 🌾

In this week's blog, Tiernan Gaffney, Curator of Trades, Crafts and Occupations in the Irish Folklife Division, reflects on the changing role of traditional crafts in modern Ireland.

While many handmade products have been replaced by mass-produced alternatives, skilled craftspeople continue to keep these traditions alive through their passion and dedication. Following a visit to Heritage Day in Ballina, Co. Mayo, Tiernan highlights three exceptional craftspeople whose expertise and enthusiasm echo the makers and artisans documented by the National Museum of Ireland over the past century.
