Here comes the sun 🤞 A Cuidiú guide for parents & caregivers during warm weather and heatwaves ☀️

✅ DO:

💧 Offer frequent feeds. Breastfeed or bottle feed more often. Offer toddlers water regularly.

👶🏽 Dress babies lightly. Choose loose, lightweight cotton clothing and a sunhat.

🌳 Stay in the shade. Keep babies and toddlers out of direct sun, especially between 11am - 3pm.

🧴 Use sun protection. For babies over 6 months: apply child-friendly SPF 50 sunscreen to exposed skin.

🛏️ Keep sleep spaces cool. Use light bedding and keep rooms ventilated if possible.

🚿 Cool them down gently. Use lukewarm baths, cool cloths, or damp flannels on neck/arms/legs.

🚗 Check car seats & buggies. Buckles and seats can become dangerously hot in the sun.

👀 Watch for signs of overheating. Flushed skin, rapid breathing, unusual sleepiness, irritability, fewer wet nappies, or dizziness.

❌ DON’T:

🚫 Don’t cover a buggy/pram with a blanket. This traps heat and reduces airflow, making the inside much hotter.

🚫 Don’t leave children in parked cars even for a minute - temperatures rise dangerously fast.

🚫 Don’t overdress babies. Babies cannot regulate temperature as well as adults.

🚫 Don’t use icy water or ice baths. Sudden cooling can be distressing and unsafe.

🚫 Don’t rely only on fans in extreme heat. Fans alone may not prevent overheating in very high temperatures.

🚫 Don’t forget nighttime heat. Rooms can stay warm overnight - check baby’s chest or back, not hands/feet, to gauge temperature.

🚫 Don’t forget to hydrate yourself too! 💦

Tiny babies are welcome too 💚

Our Humpty Dumpty playgroup is a lovely space for parents, caregivers, babies, and toddlers to meet, chat, and connect - and that absolutely includes even the youngest babies.

You don’t need to wait until your baby is “big enough” to come along. Newborns and little babies benefit from the sights, sounds, and social connection just as much as parents do. It’s also a chance for parents to get out of the house, meet others, and enjoy a warm supportive atmosphere together.

Whether your little one sleeps the whole time, feeds in your arms, or enjoys watching the bigger children play, you are very welcome 💕

Every day Cuidiú stands together in support, love and inclusion, and today on World Down Syndrome Day, we celebrate the members of our community who were born with an extra chromosome - something that makes them wonderfully unique.

It is a day that reminds us of capability, compassion and absolute joy, and of our commitment to raising awareness, promoting acceptance, and building a more inclusive future where everyone belongs.

Different, not less 💙💛

How will I know when to feed my baby? Easy! Your baby will tell you 👶💫

Newborns typically need to feed at least 10 to 12 times in 24 hours, throughout the day and night, to make sure they are getting enough milk. Rhythm is much more important than routine, and to find one to suit your family, the single best thing you can do is to follow your baby’s lead.

Responsive Feeding, known previously as “feeding on demand”, means noticing and responding to babies’ hunger and comfort cues, rather than relying on a schedule. It supports connection and trust, paving the way for an incredible bond and feeding success.

Hunger cues can be incredibly subtle to begin with, but watching your baby closely, as you get to know them, really helps.

EARLY CUES (Best Time To Feed)
• Stirring from sleep
• Rooting (moving mouth / turning head)
• Sucking on hands or fingers
🤱🏾 Feeding at this stage is usually easier and more relaxed.

MID CUES
• Increased movement / stretching
• Bringing hands to mouth repeatedly
• Fussing or mild sounds
🤱🏼 Baby is getting hungrier - offer a feed now.

LATE CUES (baby is very hungry)
• Crying
• Red face
• Agitated body movements
🤱🏻 At this stage, baby may need soothing first before feeding.

Top Tip: A closed, clenched fist is another sign that a baby is hungry. As they feed and become full, you’ll notice their hands beginning to relax and open.

Watch the baby, not the clock. You’ve got this 💪
