NAAS NW QUADRANT PLANS
Kildare County Council is proposing a change to the County Development Plan to include the Northwest Quadrant Masterplan for Naas.
This is a major long-term plan for around 300 hectares of land on the northwest side of Naas. It is expected to become the main area for future housing growth in Naas and one of the key housing locations in County Kildare.
This was on the direction of Minister James Browne , Minister of Housing. Kildare coco must provide zoned land for 5000 houses in Naas.
The plan must be about far more than simply building houses. It must be about building a real community.
That means roads, services, schools, crèches, community facilities, green spaces, parks, sports facilities, safe walking and cycling routes, employment areas and the infrastructure needed to support proper, sustainable development.
My major concern is that houses will be built first, while the essential amenities are left until later. That cannot be allowed to happen.
Families should not be moved into a new area without schools, childcare, safe roads, public spaces and community facilities already planned, funded and delivered.
Naas has seen too many examples where housing comes first and the community infrastructure comes years later, if at all.
We have one chance to get the Northwest Quadrant right. This must be a proper planned community from day one, not just another large housing estate waiting years for the facilities it needs.

I would strongly recommend that all local groups, clubs, schools, residents’ associations, childcare providers, sports organisations and community groups make a submission to the consultation process. This is the time to ask for what your area needs. Please share with your club.
If you don’t ask, you don’t get.
The purpose of this variation is to give the Northwest Quadrant a formal planning framework so that development can be guided in a structured way and not happen on a piecemeal basis.
This is a hugely important plan for the future of Naas. It is vital that we get this right from the start.
