Farewell to a true gentleman, a friend to all who met him and a great neighbour. Buddy was a one-off and will be missed, but fondly remembered, by all of us. Deepest sympathies to the Shaw families at this sad time.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Patrick (Buddy) Shaw, May he rest in eternal peace❤️ https://rip.ie/death-notice/patrick-buddy-shaw-westmeath-mullingar-577451

Seeings as Westmeath County Council has destroyed all trace of biodiversity on the Ardmore Road with almost 2kms of trees, hedgerows, banks butchered and not replaced, here’s a handy reminder of the what you can do at home to support wildlife this spring and summer. Let it grow!

The road is closed this Saturday for ‘tree felling’. We can only wonder when Westmeath County Council will embark upon tree (and hedgerow) replacement given they removed over 600m to accommodate the new cycle path and 200m for school works. Biodiversity and a place for nature losing out again…

A planning notice for an extension to the existing Ardmore Hills estate was lodged with Westmeath County Council just before Christmas.

The public has until January 28th to make submissions on the proposed 65 house development, which is the first of three new phases which will see over 200 new houses built on lands to the rear of the existing estate and on the former farm.

Unusually, despite there being two existing roads into the farm, vehicles to the new high density development will all come through the existing estate and onto the already very busy Ardmore Road.

The masterplan for the estate is in the picture below. You can make submissions for, or against, or even just observations on how it might affect you or your family, via the County Council website (www.westmeathcoco.ie) or in person at County Buildings.

The planning files detail that the first phase of the new development is for 65 no. residential units at Ardmore Hills, on a site of circa. 2.24 Has. The proposed development will comprise the construction of 3 no. 2-bedroom semi-detached & mid-terrace houses; 32 no. 3-bedroom semi-detached & mid-terrace houses; 27 no. 4-bedroom semi-detached houses; 3 no. 5-bedroom detached houses. The development provides for 123 no. car parking spaces, provision of communal open spaces, all associated hard and soft landscaping, boundary treatments, footpaths, and all other ancillary works above and below ground.

Thanks to Councillor Ken Glynn for raising this important issue, as reported in the Westmeath Topic. For years the traffic has had free reign between the N52, Newtown and Saunders Bridge. It’s only going to get worse, with more speed and the potential for serious accidents. It’s not even known if there will even be a pedestrian crossing from Millmount to the new pedestrian footbridge at Saunders Bridge, so even more danger!

Hope the Council see sense and heed his warning and don’t leave it to An Bord Pleanala to make safe a lethal public road, or worse still wait for an accident.
