Baltrasna Boreen is a small road linking the townlands of Marlinstown and Baltrasna east of Mullingar. The road crosses the Royal Canal and finishes at the Dublin-Sligo railway line. The hedges and grassy verges along the road are home to many small birds and insects. Our community group is undertaking a biodiversity project which is supported by Waterways Ireland through a community heritage grant.

Among the moths flying last night in Marlinstown were two that had previously not been recorded in Westmeath. The Brown-veined Wainscot (forewing length 12-15mm) as a larva feeds within the stem of Common Reed. Its flight season is from late July to early September. Not only has it not been recorded in Westmeath, it hasn't been recorded in any of the neighbouring counties. Brown-line Bright-eye (forewing length 15-17mm) is rarely seen in the midlands, being more common in coastal areas. Its larva feeds on grasses. Its flight season is from June to August.
