Baltrasna Boreen is a small road linking the townlands of Marlinstown and Baltrasna east of Mullingar. The road crosses the Royal Canal and finishes at the Dublin-Sligo railway line. The hedges and grassy verges along the road are home to many small birds and insects. Our community group is undertaking a biodiversity project which is supported by Waterways Ireland through a community heritage grant.

One of 17 species of moth recorded in our project area for the first time this year - the Striped Hawk-moth, seen this morning, is a scarce immigrant to Ireland and is seldom seen so far inland. It has a wingspan of 6-8cm, which is comparable to a Wren (8-10cm).
