✨UPDATE ✨

Unfortunately, the inevitable has happened and a stretch of our street lights has stopped working and is now beyond repair — and we were so close to the end of the Christmas season. 🙈 After having them assessed, our fears were confirmed: this section simply can’t be restored, which is a real pity when we were only days away from the 6th of January.

In keeping with tradition, the remaining lights will be switched off after tomorrow.

We hope you all enjoyed our colourful display this year. We’re already working hard on our grant application and hope to come back brighter than ever next Christmas.

We’ll keep you updated as the months go on.

✨Lights Update & a long post ✨

Firstly, a huge thank you to everyone who has donated and purchased memory ribbons — your support truly keeps this project going and we appreciate it more than words can say.

Some of you may have noticed areas where it looks like bulbs have blown. In reality, the issue is with damaged sockets rather than the bulbs themselves. The lighting system runs on approximately 1.9km of cable through the town, and much of it has simply reached the end of its life. We have applied for funding to purchase new festoon cable for the entire town. The total cost is estimated at €20,000, and while the grant covers 75%, we will still need to raise the remaining amount. We may have to beg, borrow and steal to bridge the gap — but we know that with this community’s spirit, we can make it happen.
Our existing cable has served us well for many years, but it is now old, worn, and prone to breakages and outages. By investing in new lighting cable, we can ensure that our town continues to shine brightly for many Christmases to come.

Huge thank you to our incredible band of volunteers who braved the cold this morning to erect our annual Tree of Remembrance🎄🎗️
This year, 245 ribbons hang gently from its branches—each one representing a loved one no longer with us, but forever cherished and remembered.

Our beautiful tree sourced from Sliabh Bloom Christmas Trees, and now stands proudly on the grounds of St Joseph’s Church. We are deeply grateful to Fr Murphy for once again welcoming the tree to the church grounds and supporting this special tradition.

Thank you to everyone who helps keep this moment of remembrance alive for our community.

✨🎄Mountmellick’s Christmas Lights Are Shining Bright! ✨

They’re lit! Our beautiful Christmas Street Lights are glowing once again, bringing festive cheer to the town.

🌟 Huge thanks to the amazing crew from the CE Scheme and to Paul Mc Nulty for ensuring everything was ready in time for tonight.

🌲 Look out for our new wooden tree installations at the approach roads — handcrafted and decorated with lights by the talented CE Scheme team. Every year we try to add a little extra especially in areas where the lights aren’t up.

💖 We will continue our fundraising efforts for a few more weeks and all donations are greatly appreciated.

Our amazing band of volunteers will be out raising funds to keep our town shining bright this Christmas! 🌟

💛 We’ll also be taking names for the Tree of Remembrance – a cherished tradition where each yellow ribbon 🎗️ (€5) honours loved ones no longer with us.

With 3,700 bulbs and nearly 2km of cable, it takes a lot of work to light up Mountmellick – but with your support, we can spread Christmas cheer one bulb at a time.🙏
