This past weekend brought both devastating heartbreak and incredible hope to sports pitches across Ireland, reminding us how fragile life is and why emergency CPR and AEDs are so critical. 🥀
🕊️ Heartbreak in Wexford
Our deepest, most heartfelt sympathies go out to the family, friends, and teammates of Taghmon Camross & Wexford LGFA following the tragic passing of young Aoibheann Clarke, who suffered a sudden medical emergency during a match. 💔
Despite immediate, heroic CPR efforts on scene, she sadly passed away. The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Naas CFR are with her family and community at this devastating time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam. 🕯️❤️
💚 Hope in Donegal
In Martina’s home town in Donegal, another player suddenly collapsed in cardiac arrest during a match—but luck were on their side & quick action saved a life. 🙏✨
🏟️ 2 Working AEDs were accessible at the clubhouse.
🧑🚒 Off-duty Firefighters & Paramedics playing in the match jumped straight into action.
⏱️ Immediate CPR & AED shock restored a heart rhythm before the ambulance arrived! 🚑💨
📊 THE POWER OF BYSTANDER CPR & DEFIBRILLATION
Data from the Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest Register (OHCAR) shows us why early intervention is everything:
🚑 ~3,000 People experience an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in Ireland every single year.
📈 Bystander CPR on the Rise: 84% of unwitnessed/bystander-witnessed cardiac arrests in Ireland received bystander CPR before emergency services arrived—a 24% increase over recent years & growing annually! 💓
⚡ Public AEDs Save Lives: While overall survival rates currently sit at 8.4% & are increasing annually, survival rates jump dramatically to around 30% when a bystander delivers a shock with an AED before emergency services arrive! 📈💓
🏡 The Community Advantage: Data shows the odds of receiving early CPR and defibrillation are actually higher in rural and local community areas, heavily driven by active CFR groups bridging the gap during ambulance response times & promoting community CPR & AED awareness
