ALONE is a national organisation that supports and empowers older people to age happily and securely at home. They have three different roles available for volunteers in Co. Monaghan at the moment. Choose between phone based roles and home visits, purely social or supporting older people with difficulties. If you can spare an hour or two weekly and enjoy a chat, ALONE could be perfect for you!

St. Vincent de Paul Monaghan Branch would like to hear from someone willing to drive a patient from his home in Monaghan Town to hospital appointments in Navan three times a year.

They have plenty of notice of appointment date (about 3 months). Appointments are Monday to Friday and can be either morning or afternoon. The patient is mobile and does not need help in and out of the car. He has limited English.

The next appointment is 16th June - an existing SVP volunteer will drive the patient to that one but would like a new volunteer to go with her and the patient and be ready to do the next appointment.

If you might be interested but have questions feel free to contact Sinéad Keenan at Monaghan Volunteer Centre at 087 4173944 or [email protected]

Drumkill Day Care Centre would like a volunteer who could fill in as a bus es**rt when the regular es**rt is unavailable. Escorts travel on the Local Link buses each Tuesday and Thursday as they collect passengers and brings them to Drumkill and then bring them home later.

The volunteer will be on the bus between 11am and 1.00pm as the bus collects people and again between 4.00pm and 6.00pm as the bus brings people home.

The volunteer will be there to help people enter and exit the bus safely and accompany the people who attend Drumkill on their journey to the centre.

Between 1pm and 4pm volunteers can either leave the centre (they might want to arrange a lift if going beyond Threemilehouse) or else they are very welcome to stay with us in the centre and help out with other tasks.

The centre closes for July and August, and also other holiday periods like Halloween, Christmas and Easter.

👋 Meet Kathleen Cassidy.

As part of National Volunteering Week, we’re highlighting some of the people quietly making a difference in communities across Co. Monaghan through their volunteering.

Kathleen volunteers with the The Alzheimer Society of Ireland Monaghan Branch Social Club, which takes place every second Friday in Monaghan Town, and also serves as a committee member for the local branch.

Kathleen first became involved following her mother’s diagnosis with dementia. After experiencing the incredible support and kindness provided by the Alzheimer Society of Ireland, she decided she wanted to give something back and support others going through similar journeys.

As part of the social club, Kathleen helps create a warm, welcoming and enjoyable environment for members and their families. She is also known as the group’s resident crafts teacher, regularly organising seasonal arts and crafts activities around holidays and special occasions. These sessions provide a fun and creative outlet that helps encourage social connection & cognitive stimulation for people living with dementia.

Kathleen’s creativity and willingness to help others has made a real difference to so many families across the community.
