This week’s club notes.
Down Memory Lane
In this week’s trip down Memory Lane we go back to 1965 as we recall some games involving the Club's 1st team who was competing in Junior ranks back then, as well as taking a glance at the underage scene.
First, we look back at a Junior League match in which Fenagh defeated Mohill on a 2-4 to 1-5scoreline. The team lined out as follows… John Mulligan, Michael Gallagher, Christie McCaffrey, Vincie Crosan, Sean Kilraine, Frank Reynolds, Michael McGuinness, Paul Greenan, Des Clyne,Sean Bannon, Padraig Guckian, Sylvester Kivlehan, Johnny Rowley. Subs. Brendan Gallagher, Brendan McGowan, Peter Gordon, Eddie Costello. Marksmen were Johnny Rowley 0-3, Sylvester Kivlehan 1-0, Michael McGuinness 0-2.
Also in the Junior League we played and defeated fellow parishioners, Eslin, in the park on a 3-3 to 0-3 scoreline. The lineout was as follows… Liam McGowan, Brendan Gallagher, Sean Bannon, Frank Reynolds, Sean Kilraine, Peter Gordon, Michael McGuinness, Paul Greenan, Eamon Treacy, Sylvester Kivlehan, Brendan McGowan, Johnny Rowley, Des Clyne. Sub used Michael Gallagher. Marksmen were Des Clyne 2-0, Johnny Rowley 1-0, Michael McGuinness 0-3.
In the Junior championship we defeated Carrick on a 3-8 to 2-1 scoreline. The lineout was as follows…Brendan Mc Gowan, Michael Gallagher, Tom Mulvey , Eddie Costello, Shane Moran, Sean Kilrane, Anthony Canning, Paul Greenan, Des Keegan, Sean Melia, Sean Bannon, Peter Gordon, Pat Lynch, Brendan Gallagher, Sylvester Kivlehan. Sub used Liam Guckian. Marksmen were Sylvester Kivlehan 2-2, Sean Bannon 0-4, Paul Greenan 1-0, Liam Guckian 0-2.
In the semi-final, we scored a resounding 3-13 to 0-2 victory over a fancied Fenagh team. John Mulligan and Michael Gallagher in defence were outstanding, as was Paul Greenan at centre-field, and Liam Guckian, Pat Lynch, and Dermot Bonner in attack.
In the South Leitrim final we defeated Aughanasheelin on a 1-8 to 1-7 scoreline. Outstanding on the day were Tom Mulvey, Dermot Bonner, Sean Kilrane, and Liam Guckian. However, we lost the game on an objection. Our minor panel in ‘65 was made up of the following players… Sean ‘Bula’ McCrann, Liam Guckian, Liam McGowan, Brendan McGowan, Jimmy Conboy, Des Keegan, Frankie Keegan, Shane Moran, John P Boyle, Chris Meehan, Sean Melia, Ambrose McCrann, Tony Farrell, Eddie Manning, Mattie Bannon, Tommy Murphy, John Joe McLoughlin, Seamus Gallagher. The following players were on our Under-14 panel (or school boys as it was still known back then). Harry McCrann, Martin Moran, John Dunleavy, Ciaran Kelly, Brian Gordon, John Baxter, Gerry Flood, Tom Melia, Seamus Beirne, Joe Beirne, Joe Boyle, Paddy Murphy, Muiradeach Gallagher, Fintan Gannon, Tom Gannon, Joe Burns, Cyril Keaton, Fintan Keaton, Russell Shannon, Seamus Mulhern. Several of the above later went on to win Senior championship medals in 1971 namely Sean ‘Bula’ McCrann as Captain, Michael McGuinness ( a match winner on the day), John Baxter (a towering display at midfield) Sean Kilrane, Sean Bannon, Des Keegan, Frankie Keegan, Brendan McGowan, Brendan Gallagher, Anthony Canning, Shane Moran, Martin Moran, Ciaran Kelly (all on the starting 15). Paul Greenan, who came on as a sub and Liam Guckian, (who did not play in the final). Brian Gordon, who missed the decider due to a broken ankle, plus Subs. Sylvester Kivlehan, Tom Melia, Harry McCrann, Joe Beirne, John Dunleavy, not forgetting Johnny Rowley and Michael Gallagher who were Selectors. Vincie Crossan, Michael Gallagher, Peter Gordon, Eddie Costello won Junior Championship medals in1968.
Under-17 Div. 2 Championship Semi-Final
Just like our Seniors, our Under-17 team bowed out of their championship race on Saturday week last when they suffered a 1-14 to 3-5 defeat to the Home side, Saint Josephs, in a blustery Carrigallen in the Division two semi-final. The lineout was as follows…Tom McManus, Alex Mitchell, Kaiden McKeon, Joey McGovern, Conor Reynolds, John Macklin, Conor Brennan, John Mee, Diarmuid Higgins, Nathan O’Donnell, Kevin Gallogly, Conal Walpole, Ryan Sheehan, Jack Gilheaney.
Under-13 Championship Div. 1 Semi-Final
Our Under-13 team booked their place in the Division One championship final for the first time in 14 years courtesy of a 4-7 to 2-8 victory over a gallant Glencar-Manorhamilton side at Park Philly on Saturday last on an October day borrowed from Summer. Our lads went into the game on the back of a seven match unbeaten run and indeed, got off to a bright start with a fine point from full-forward Dean Clyne in the first minute. At half-time we led by 2-2 to 1-2 following a low scoring opening period in which our lads looked nervous and never really produced the free flowing football they produced in previous games with a brace of goals from Dean proving vital. Our only other first half scorer was Sean McGarry who converted a 45 in the ninth minute, a Terrance Scollan 2x pointer just after the resumption put further daylight between the sides and it got even better for our lads when super-sub Kai Nathan fired home a well taken goal 2 minutes later to give us an eight point advantage. During the remainder of the half Ethan McManus bagged 1-2, while Dean Clyne added a point for good measure. With time almost up we led by seven points before the losers closed the scoring with a superb 2x pointer. Highlights of the contest from a Mohillian’s viewpoint would have to include our four goals courtesy of Dean Clyne (2), Kai Nathan and Ethan Mac, a few superb pieces of defending from full-back Daniel Tiernan, and a 2 xpointer from Terence Scollan at a vital stage of the contest. Marksmen were Dean Clyne 2-2, Ethan McManus 1-2, Kai Nathan 1-0, Terence Scollan 0-2, Sean McGarry 0-1. The lineout was as follows… Bobby Lupton, (a capable deputy for the injured Eoin McCrann between the posts), James Kilcrann, Daniel Tiernan, Eoghan O’Carolan, Niall McGarry, Sean McGarry, Eoin McWeeney, Harry Dolan, Ethan McManus, Tadhg Clyne, Ethan Chamunorna, Terence Scollan, Kayson Moran, Dean Clyne, Reece Gilheaney. Subs. used were Noah O’Reilly, Kai Nathan, Tristan McWeeney, Eoghan Doonan. Other subs were Darragh Canning, Daire O’Reilly, Ethan Evans, Max Collins, Ryan Faughnan, Aodhan Kilraine, Oisin Clancy, Tomas Mulligan. Well done to the Management team of Harry Boyle, Johnny Boyle, Alex Dolan, Kephas Reilly, Dennis Doonan and Paul Kilcrann on their work with the group during the year. We now meet a very strong Allen Gaels team in the final.
The Gaels defeated Saint Mary’s in Saturday’s other semi final on 5-10 to 0-11 scoreline.
Relagation Final
Our second team suffered a 3-15 to 1-5 defeat to Glenfarne in Drumshanbo on Sunday last in the Junior A relegation final. Our lads under the Management team of Paul McGuinness, Don Flynn, and Mickey Quinn played against a strong breeze in the opening half and looked to be in a good place at half time when only trailing by 0-8 to 0-5, but playing with the elements after the break we only managed a meagre 1-1 while the winners hit an impressive 3-7. Our lineout was as follows…Codey Tighe, Daniel Scott, Adam McGuinness, Ciaran Kennedy, Tomas Mayock, Caillìn Canning, Johnny Boyle, Eoghan Duignan, Oscar Reynolds, Harry Boyle, Darragh Gordon, Ryan Gordon, Keith McCaffrey, Ronan Gordon, John Macklin. Subs.Barry Lupton, Shane Mayock, Shane Moran, Diarmuid Casey. Marksmen were Harry Boyle 1-1,John Macklin 0-2, Oscar Reynoldss 0-1, Ryan Gordon 0-1.
College Football
Our best wishes go to Club players Jack Rowley, Harry Boyle, and Frankie McManus who have been selected on the Sligo IT panel.

Condolences.
Our condolences go to the families and friends of Peter Carroll (Jnr), New York and formally of Mohill, John McGarry, Gorvagh, and Catherine Beirne, Hillstreet and formally of Annaduff, who passed away last week.
The town and local area was shocked and deeply saddened when the news filtered through on Monday last of the unexpected passing in New York of Peter Carroll (Jnr). Peter played underage for Mohill, and was a Mascot when we won the Intermediate Championship in 1999. To Peter’s father Peter (Snr), his mother Bridie, brother Cliff, grandmother Kitty, his two sons PJ and Trevor, their mother’s Amanda and Melissa, as well as all extended family members we offer our sincere sympathy at this very sad time.
It was with much regret we learned of the unexpected passing of John McGarry on Monday evening of last week. John’s grandsons Sean McGarry, Niall McGarry, and Max Collins all play with our Under-13 team, while his son Shane is a former Underage and Junior player.
At this point we send our condolences to the Beirne brothers Charlie, Kevin, and Michael on the sudden passing of their aunt-in-law Catherine last week.
