This week's club notes.
Down Memory Lane
In this week’s trip down Memory Lane we go back to 1995 as we recall a few games involving with the Club during that particular year. Firstly, we recall a Junior championship game played in Carrick in which we lost out to Melvin Gaels on a 0-9 to 1-5 scoreline. The team lined out as follows… Frank McGowan, Derek Canning, Gerry Kilrane, Mark ‘Lefty’ Canning, Paul Kivlehan, Paul McDermott, Fintan Greenan, Fr. Pat Kiernan, David Wynne, Peter Gaffey, Kieran O'Carolan, Padraig Murphy, Ray O’ Carolan, Pascal McKeon, Jim Rogers. Sub. Eamon O'Toole. Paul McDermott, Paul Kivlehan, Derek Canning, and Ray O’ Carolan were still under 16. Speaking of the Under-16s, they enjoyed a great year winning the League and Championship double for the first time in 10 years defeating Saint Mary’s in both Finals. In the Championship decider they won on a 1-13 to 2-4 scoreline with both teams producing some superb football on the day. The lineout was as follows… Dermot Scollan, Derek Canning, John McCrann, Val Fitzpatrick, Colin Murphy, Paul Mc Dermott, Adrian Scollan,Casserly, Paul Kivlehan, Michael Mc Guinness, Ray O’Carolan, Shane Canning, Carl Rogers, John McGuinness, Harry Doyle. Subs. James Gaffey, Paul Conaty, Tom Fitzpatrick. We fondly recall such nicknames as Jazz, Jinksy, Cuddles, and Bocha. For the record, we defeated St. Marys in the League Final by 5-11 to 0-5. The Under-14 team also enjoyed a great year. In June, they won the championship defeating Allen Gaels in the final by 4-16 to 1-1. The lineout was as follows… Paul Conaty, David Murphy, Dermot Scollan (Capt), Derek Wynne, Sean Kennedy, James Gaffey, Shane Conboy, Shane Canning, Michael McGuinness, Ciaran Kennedy. Peter Guckian, David Conaty, Gavin McLoughlin, Kephas Reilly, Philly McGuinness RIP. Subs. used Anthony Reynolds, James Gordon, Maurice Barry. Marksmen were Peter Guckian 1-6, Shane Canning 1-3, Kephas Reilly 2-0, Gavin McLoughlin 0-4, Ciaran Kennedy 0-2, Philly McGuinness 0-1. They also reached the League Decider but lost out to Saint Mary’s and reached the All Ireland Feile Semi-Final in Mayo where they came up against a much taller New York team who looked very mature for their years. (Maybe a different diet).Shane Canning won a ‘player of the tournament’ award in Sligo. Our under-12s lost the town’s Championship Final to St. Mary’s, but later in the year they won the all Ireland League title defeating Gortletteragh in the Final by 2-8 to 2-4. Star of the show was twinkle toed eleven year old Philly McGuinness who scored 0-5 of our total while, Captain David Conaty led by example. Niall Mulligan played all year in goals, but missed the final due to a broken ankle, but his replacement Paul Kilcrann however, did not let us down on the big day. The lineout was as follows…Paul Kilcrann, Donnacha Reynolds, Jason Reilly, Niall Walsh, Paul Bannon, James Gordon, Niall McGuinness, David Conaty (Capt.), Ciaran Kennedy, Philly McGuinness RIP, Joe Gaffey, Enda Turbitt, Gary Canning, Paul Logan, Noel Mahon. Sub. Michael Patrick Wearthy, Paul Early, David Faughnan, Joe Britton, Brian Beirne, Steven Corcoran, Scott Hunter, Conor Gordon, Colin Turbett, Sean Gildea, Cormac Duignan, Gilhooly, Conor Mulligan, Colm Stenson. Interesting to note the number of brothers on above teams such as Cannings – Mark, Derek, Shane, Gary, Mc Guinness - Johnny, Michael, Philly, Scollabs - Adrian, Dermot, Kennedy – Sean, Ciaran, O'Carolan – Kieran, Ray, Reilly - Kephas, Jason, Gordon – James, Conor, Gaffey – Peter, James, Joe, Turbett – Enda, Colin, Mulligans – Niall, Conor, Conaty- Paul, David, Fitzpatrick’s - Val, Tom. Well done to the Management team of Lee Cassells, Niall Brennan, Kevin Curran, Ciaran Baxter, on helping to get the team so far. Tom McManus dad,Cormac, was on the 1986 team, and later was Captain of the Minor championship winning team that year, While co-manager Lee Cassells is son of goalie of the 1986 team, the late Padraig Cassells RIP.
All County Senior League
It was a case of third time lucky when on Friday evening last our Senior team helped us somewhat to get over two defeats at underage level earlier in the evening when they travelled to Aughavas where they recorded a fairly emphatic 3-18 to 0-4 victory over the Home side in round six of the All County League. Our lineout was as follows…Padraig Tighe, David Mitchell, James Mitchell, Ryan Bohan, Shane Quinn, Caillian Canning, Eoghan Duignan, Frankie McManus, Reynolds, Evan Harkin, Domhnaill Flynn, Matthew Murphy, Fiachra McGuinness, Ronan Gordon, John Macklin. Subs. Harry Boyle, Johnny Boyle, Adam McGuinness, Alan Armstrong, Tadhg Mulligan. Great to see Domhnaill Flynn playing his first game of the year following an operation earlier in the year. It’s also good to see Ryan Bohan making a welcome return to the side having missed the last couple of games due to injury.
Tailteann Cup
The phrases ‘Jekyll and Hyde’, ‘a game of two halves’, and ‘blowing hot and cold’ spring to mind following Leitrim’s 0-20 to 1-12 defeat to Wexford in Park Sean on Saturday last. Leitrim trailed at the interval by 0-14 to 0-0. A remarkable score line considering there was no Gale force wind blowing. This was the first time in about 30 years that a Leitrim Senior team failed to score in the first half as the Wexford men totally overpowered and outplayed Stephen Poachers charges in the opening period. However, it was a ‘different’ Home team who took the field for the second-half during which they outplayed and outscored the ‘yellow bellies’ by 1-12 to 0-6, but in the end, it proved that the mountain was just too steep to climb despite a spirited second-half performance. The Club were again represented by Conor Quinn, Keith Keegan, and Sean Harkin. This ends our Taillteann Cup Campaign for 2026, and brings down the curtain for the year.
The mighty Quinn
Congrats to young Clubman, Conor Quinn on making His 20th competitive Senior appearance for Leitrim against Wexford on Saturday last. Hopefully, Conor will enjoy many more days in the green and gold in the years ahead. Not sure how many appearances older bro. Shane has to his name, but with kid brother in his early 20s, he could surpass him.
Reserve League Division 1
Our second team travelled to a blustery Stanley Cox Memorial Park on Sunday last where they defeated the Home team, Annaduff, on a 4-17 to 0-6 scoreline in round six at the Division one Reserve League.
