Club Notes - 30th August 2026
Down Memory Lane
In last weekβs trip down Memory Lane we looked back at some senior games involving Mohill during 1987. Following on, this week we recall some games at underage and junior level during that particular year. The first match we recall is technically not a club game, it being the national schoolβstownβs final in which Carrick beat Mohill on a 1-5 to O-3 scoreline, but both teams contained all club players. The Carrick boys were backed by a very strong breeze on that June, Wednesday evening in Annaduff during the opening half of a keenly contested, and entertaining encounter andwent in leading at the interval by 0-3 to 0-0 with our boys having defended gallantly. Our boys, confident that the windwould swing things around in the their favour during the second period opened their account just after the resumption when our most dangerous forward Michael lynch, converteda free following a foul on Mick McGee, and a minute later he soloed through the Carrick Rearguard to point. We then received a major body blow when in a low scoring contest,Carrick pounced for an opportunic goal in the sixth minute.The winners added two points to their tally during the remainder of the half, while a succession of fine saves by the Carrick keeper kept our lads at bay, (perhaps they should have went for points), while Finny Moran was our only other second-half point scorer. Mohill had excellent performers inJohn Mitchell, Noel McKeon, Denis McGuinness, Kieran OβCarolan, Eugene Fitzpatrick, Mick McGee, and Michael Lynch. Marksmen were M. Lynch O-2 F. Moran 0-1. The lineout was as follows...Cathal Shivnan, John Mitchell, Noel McKeon, Gareth Dolan, Denis McGuinness, John Casey,Kieran Oβ Carolan, Eugene Fitzpatrick (Capt.), MickMcGee, Padraig McNulty, Michael Lynch, Kiaran Walpole,Noel McNulty, Finny Moran, Shane McGrath. Subs. Gerry Moran, Kevin Beirne. Next, we record a junior βBβchampionship game in Cloone in which Mohill defeated Carrigallen on a 4-8 to1-8 scoreline. Our lads led at the interval by 3-5 to 0-0 with midfielder Pascal McKeonbagging a hat-trick of goals. In fairness to the losers, they certainly did not throw in the towel and battled gallantly against the odds during that second period. Pascal McKeon with 3-1 to his name was βMan of the Matchβ, while his centre field partner, Seamus Duignan, defenders frank McGowan, Ferguss Casey (still under 16) and Cormac Rowley and forwards Gerry Cosgrove and John McManus also played well on the day. Marksmen were P. McKeon 3-1,S. Duignan 1-4,G. Cosgrove 0-3. The lineout on that sunny July day was as followsβ¦ Dermot McDermott, Frank McGowan, Tomas Egan, Fergus Casey, Padraig Cassells, Mel Foy, Cormac Rowley, Seamus Duignan, Pascal McKeon, John McManus, Kieran Moran, Gerry Cosgrove,Vincent Moran, Gerry McCauley, Peter Logan. Sub. John Joe McDermott Remembering Cormac Rowley, PadraigCassells, and Gerry McCauley who are sadly no longer with us. Finally, we recall a final round Under-12 championship game in which a depleted Mohill side went down fighting to a stronger Ballinamore team. I donβt know the actual lineout but Steven Reilly, Alex Dolan, Cathal Shivnan, Tomas OβRourke, Russell Egan, Gerry Scollan, Clint Taylor, Denis McGuinness, John Gaffey, Kevin Beirne, Kieran Walpole, Claire Mc Keon all turned in spirited displays. CiaranMcCaffrey, Kieran Walpole, Declan Canning, MarkCanning, Mal Gaffey, Peter Gaffey, Noel McNulty, Brian Grennan, and David Maguire played all summer, but were all away for this encounter.
Under-17 Championship
Our under-17 team recorded a 5-12 to 1-12 victory over St. Bridgetβs in the third round of the Division 2 championship following an encounter played in ideal conditions at park Philly on Monday evening of last week with our boys having led at the interval by 2-5 to 0-7 with our two goals coming via Ronan Curren and Nathan OβDonnell, both superbly taken. Our Marksmen were Nathan OβDonne 1-6, Kevin Gallogly 1-4, Ronan Curren 1-0, Joey McGovern 1-0 Dylan McDermott 1-0 John Mitchell 0-1 Kilcrann 0-1. The lineout was as follows β¦Tom Mc Manus, Ben Kavanagh, KaidenMcKeon, Rian OβDonoghue, John Mitchell, Conor Reynolds, Diarmuid Higgins, John Mee, Conor Brennan, Joey McGovern, Kevin Gallogly Tadhg Wynne, Jack Gilheaney, Nathan OβDonnell, Ronan Curren. Subs. Dylan McDermott, John McDonogh, Callum Kilcrann, Alex Mitchell all used. Marcel Kaycperek, Eoghan Brennan,Cormac McGuire.
Under-13 Championship (Div. 1)
Our Under-13 team made it two wins from two starts in the Division One under-13 championship when on Tuesday evening of last week they scored a superb 2-10 to 3-5 victoryover a strong St. Maryβs outfit at a dull and wet Pairc NaomhMhuire. Our boys who were deserving winners on the day,trailed at the break by 2-2 to 0-7. We led by 0-5 to 0-0 at the end of the first quarter before the Home side outscored us by 2-2 to 0-2 during the remainder of the half with their second goal being a gift wrapped one. St. Maryβs enhanced their lead with a point just after the resumption but Dean Clynestruck for his and his team's first goal in the third minute. Three unanswered points from Ethan McManus put us into a 1-10 to 2-3 lead entering the closing stages, but the losers then replied with a point, following a minute later with a goal to level the match before full forward Clyne rammed home his second goal. The Home team responded with a point, but our charges held on for a superb victory. Ethan McManus once again caught the eye with his prolific scoring and all round play, while Sean McGarry, Niall McGarry,Ethan Chamunorna, Daniel Tiernan, Eoghan OβCarolan,Harry Dolan, and two- goal hero Dean Clyne all turned in fine displays, ably assisted by the impressive Eoin McCrannwho could not be faulted in goals. James Kilcrann, EoinMcWeeney, Eoghan Doonan, Terence Scollan, Reece Gilheaney, Kayson Moran. Our lineout was Eoin McCrann, Eoghan OβCarolan, Daniel Tiernan, James Kilcrann, Niall McGarry, Sean McGarry, Eoin McWeeney, Ethan McManus, Harry Dolan, Eoghan Doonan, Ethan Chamunorna, Terrence Scollan, Reece Gilheaney, Dean Clyne, Kayson Moran. Our Subs. were Tadhg Clyne (who also played well when brought on), Noah OβReilly, Tristian McWeeney, Ryan Faughnan, Aodhan Kilrane, Max Collins, Bobby McManus.
Under-13 (Div 3)Championship
Our second Under-13 team made the two wins from three starts in the Division 3 championship on Thursday evening last when they travelled to Drumshanbo and defeated the Home team Allen Gaels on a 2-7 to 2-6 scoreline. The lineout was as follows...Eoin McCrann, Aodhan Kilrane,James Kilcrann, Bobby Lupton, Niall McGarry, Eoin McWeeney, Tomas Mulligan, Eoghan Oβ Carolan, Harry Dolan,Tadhg Clyne, Eoghan Doonan, Max Collins,DarraghCanning, Kai Nathan, Tristian McWeeney. Subs Ethan Evans, Ryan Faughnan Noah OβReilly.
