Mayo Dark Skies

Mayo Dark Skies A community group established to support Ireland's 1st gold tier International Dark Sky Park - Mayo Dark Sky Park.

Our Motto: "Let's help children to name more stars in the sky, than stars on the Screen" County Mayo in the West of Ireland has pristine skies for stargazing. The Friends of Mayo Dark Skies steering group has established this page to support the application for Mayo International Dark Sky Park to seek recognition as an official dark-sky place from the International Dark-Sky Association. There is a

growing interest in astro-tourism & astro photography yet astronomy is not the only reason for developing a dark-sky place. Educational programmes for locals, schools and visitors alike. Astronomy being science based, lends itself well to develop interest in physics, natural environment and mathematics. Apart from minimising the effects of light pollution, dark sky places offer protection to wildlife and the environment - many insects, birds and mammals rely on darkness at night to function properly. Human health can also be affected by excessive lighting at night which interferes with our circadian clock. Energy and cost efficiency is also a key benefit. Through efficient lighting where it is needed, costs and waste can be reduced considerably. Cover page photographs by Brian Wilson with kind permission.

🌟 June 16–18 – Planet Line-Up (Evening Sky)

✨ Look west after sunset the next few evenings!

Right after sunset in Ireland, you’ll see a beautiful line forming low over the western horizon:
🌙 Thin crescent Moon
✨ Venus (very bright)
🪐 Jupiter
☄️ Mercury (very low - clear horizon needed)

⏰ Best time:
22:15 – 23:00 (just after sunset glow fades)
👉 Find a spot with a clear view west - like a beach or open field 🌊
📸 Perfect for photos with the twilight sky!

🌑 June 15 - New Moon (Dark Sky Window)

🌌 Best night of the month for Irish stargazing!

Tonight’s New Moon means no moonlight - just pure dark skies 🌟

👉 True darkness is short this time of year, so your best window is:
⏰ Around 23:30 – 02:30

🌠 If you can get a little bit away from light pollution - you’ve got a real chance to spot the Milky Way faintly stretching across the sky.

🔭 Wrap up warm, head somewhere rural, and give your eyes 20 minutes to adjust.

Fantastic work by Newport Tidy Towns and Newport Mayo in promoting ways to help nature after dark. Many of our fruit crops are pollinated by nocturnal insects so planting a Moon Garden (like the one in Newport!) can really help them (as well as low levels of lighting of course).

For more information on which species to use and for other ideas for promoting nocturnal pollinators, check out the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan for protecting Nocturnal Pollinators which we were proud to collaborate onhttps://pollinators.ie/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/AIPP-Nocturnal-Guide-2023-WEB.pdf

As the sun sets, the Moon Garden comes to life. Created by Newport Tidy Towns this special garden is packed with beautiful, scented flowers that attract moths, beetles, bats, and other night-time pollinators. These often-overlooked creatures play a huge role in keeping our ecosystems healthy and thriving. By planting species like honeysuckle, red campion, and night-scented stock, we’re creating a welcoming space for wildlife while adding beauty to our community. The Moon Garden, located beside the medical centre on the bank to the viaduct, is a simple reminder that even after dark, nature is hard at work – and together we can help it flourish.

The city that never sleeps might finally sleep! 😴

The Dark Sky Protection Act is currently working its way through the state legislature in Albany, New York. This bill that is aimed at reducing the amount of artificial light between 11pm until 5am through out the entire state of New York. 🌙✨

Supporters say it could improve sleep, protect wildlife, and save energy. While critics worry about safety in darker streets, the bill does have exceptions for billboards, municipal and highway lights, airports and emergency entities. 🛣️🛬

If this bill passes, it will take effect in January 2028 and would be a huge step towards protecting our dark skies, biodiversity and reducing energy consumption.

We're delighted to take part in the 8th International Swift Conference this week at ATU Mayo. Already this event has been a massive success with a packed programme and attendance from 16 countries! Congratulations to Swift Conservation Ireland, ATU Mayo and all involved in organising a wonderful event for the County.

Mayo's Swift Conservation project has been hugely successful in increasing the numbers of this amazing creature, which is under huge threat from loss of habitat and nesting opportunities. Now is the time to enjoy the swifts that are back in Mayo and to see and hear their amazing screaming parties - a sight and sound to behold. So take a moment to check the Swift Conservation website, go outside and look up!
