North Kildare Dyslexia Association

North Kildare Dyslexia Association . Information

The North Kildare Dyslexia Association is run to help children diagnosed with specific learning difficulties, otherwise known as Dyslexia.

Permanently closed.

Dyslexia manifests itself differently in each child and is as unique to each child as their own fingerprint. What one child will find easy to cope with, another will struggle with! We cater to each child’s individual difficulties within a group setting. In as much as we can, we offer individualised care and attention and endeavour to keep the group sizes as small as economically viable. Each of th

e tutors has been trained specifically to deal with students struggling with dyslexia. Unlike other programmes which class themselves as similar to ours, we are affiliated to the Dyslexia Association of Ireland (DAI). We are also staffed with qualified teachers who have undertaken the necessary training at the DAI to acquire the experience needed to deal with children struggling with dyslexia. As some of you may have realised by now, in trying to help your child at home, Dyslexia is not an easy disability to diagnose or remedy. There are no quick fixes and at times it does appear it is one step forward and two steps back. Due to the dedication of the teaching staff and the educational programme put in place, which we have fine-tuned over the last number of years, all children will have measurable success. Topics taught: During your childs time here they will be taught under the following headings;
Spellings,
Reading & Comprehension,
Writing,
Computer Technology,
Mind Maps,
Memory Techniques. Spellings:
Phonics; Phonetics; Word Endings; Applying context to words and putting those words into sentences; learning spelling techniques to increase sight vocabulary list. Reading and Comprehension:
Developing fluency in reading. Developing proper intonation/ inflection for prose and recognising punctuation and applying that in reading tone. Developing dictionary skills to improve vocabulary. Teaching techniques to improve comprehension of passages read. Writing:
Tracking and highlighting; Closed exercises, creative writing (start-middle-finish); how to answer comprehension questions. Senior Group:
Computer Skills; Lexion and Wordshark programmes. Touch typing skills. Creative writing on computer. Mind mapping and memory techniques. Advanced Group (secondary pupils):
Sample Junior Cert past papers (English)
Parents of Children attending:
We also cater for the needs of parents. As parents of children with difficulties, we can find it at times frustrating, at times exasperating and at times entertaining. Children with dyslexia show remarkable abilities in other areas, and it is these areas we as parents should highlight and encourage in our children. Parents who have children diagnosed a number of years are a great source of information and knowledge and all parents are encouraged to come along to the coffee afternoons where you can mix and chat, sharing information and support. Our Committee:
We also have an active committee and every parent is required to help out in the fundraising efforts of the workshop. We have been successful in the past few years only because of the dedication and input of the parents of this workshop and we hope this continues. Every cent earned is ploughed back into the workshop, into resources, technology or grants to those most in need. Times:
On Wednesdays during the academic year, from 4.30pm – 6.30pm. at Scoil Dara, Secondary School in Kilcock. For further information contact:

What a great turnout at our meeting last night. Some new faces and some not so new. a big thanks to all who attended.

Unfortunately one of the announcements I had to make was that after 17 years of steering this ship Martina Stokes informed me in July that she was resigning at the end of this term. Martina is taking up a new challenge and felt that it was the right time for a change.
We wish her all the best in the future and a big thanks from the bottom of our hearts for all the help and support she has give to us all.
One in a million!

On a more positive note Michelle, who has been teaching at the workshop has agreed to take over as coordinator so all are still in good hands.

Voice Recognition
Voice recognition is software which allows a user have their speech converted into text on screen. In addition the software has a range of voice commands that allows you to control your computer with your voice, starting programmes, browsing the web, sending emails etc. As a means of enabling control this is now a realistic option for those who have suitable speaking voices. These systems take time to "train" to recognise the speaker, but with practice it is possible to work at the speed of a good typist. More recently these systems have become much more affordable. This one day training session will be hands on, however, it is an introductory session, further training may be required. During this course attendees will get to utilise voice recognition on different devices and operating systems, such as Windows, Mac OS and IOS/IPad. Attendees will also be given the opportunity to compare free voice recognition software with professional voice recognition software.

Inspiration Software – Mind Mapping Techniques
A mind map is a diagram used to visually display a concept or information. A mind map is often created around a single word or text, placed in the centre, to which associated ideas, words and concepts are added. Major categories radiate from a central topic, and lesser categories are sub-branches of larger branches. Categories can represent words, ideas, tasks, or other items related to a central key word or idea. Mind maps can be used to generate, visualize, structure, and classify ideas, and as an aid to studying and organizing information, solving problems, making decisions, and writing.
A Mind Map is a visual thinking tool that can be applied to all cognitive functions, especially memory, learning, creativity and analysis.
