Lucan Lions Club and Special Olympics Continue Longstanding Partnership!

Lucan Lions Club would like to sincerely thank everyone who supported the annual Spinathon at SuperValu Lucan, held in conjunction with Lucan Special Olympics Club. The event has become a valued fixture in the local community, with funds raised going directly towards supporting the work and activities of the local Special Olympics club. The partnership between Lucan Lions and Lucan Special Olympics has a long and proud history, dating back to the 2003 Special Olympics Host Town programme, when many volunteers came together to welcome and support athletes and their families in Lucan. Many of those volunteers subsequently became members of Lucan Lions Club, helping to build a lasting connection between the two organisations. The continued success of the Spinathon is a wonderful reflection of that enduring community spirit, and Lucan Lions extends its thanks to SuperValu Lucan, all the volunteers, participants and members of the public who generously supported this year’s event.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to the last three days takings 🪙🙌

The generosity of the communities we visit, alongside the wonderful local retailers who support us by giving our green boxes a home on their counters, truly knows no bounds. We were very busy and over the three days our takings amounted to an amazing €3,213.33. We are incredibly grateful for this ongoing kindness.

Thanks a million from all the team! ❤️

Since its foundation in 1988, Lucan Lions Club distributed in excess of €250,000 to community causes, supporting organisations and individuals making a real difference across Lucan and beyond.

The evening also highlighted the Lions’ long-standing commitment to sight conservation. In 1925, Helen Keller challenged Lions members to become “knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness”. Lions Clubs around the world answered that call and continue to support vision-related initiatives today.

Lucan Lions Club collects unwanted spectacles, which are transported for processing before being distributed to people in developing countries who need access to corrective eyewear. A special presentation recognised Ger Moran, whose dedication helped collect an incredible 15,000 pairs of glasses. In recognition of his outstanding contribution, she received the prestigious Melvin Jones Award, one of the highest honours within Lions Clubs International.

The club also recognised Marian O’Shea and marked her 10 years of dedicated service as Secretary of Lucan Lions Club.

👏 Congratulations to all of the award recipients, volunteers and members of Lucan Lions Club for their continued commitment to supporting local communities and helping those in need.
