Open House Limerick's theme for 2021 is ‘Architecture is Reconnecting’ which aims to inspire thousands of participants with a fantastic programme of events that will inspire, enthuse, provoke and entertain in a Covid-safe environment. The theme will not only display Limerick’s architectural talent but also engages with the public to discuss how architects and communities can work together to find
new ways to reconnect. COVID-19 has forced many of us to reconsider the way we think of our homes, neighbourhoods, villages, towns and city. New restrictions and lockdowns have altered how we engage with our surroundings – reconnecting and rediscovering our back gardens, balconies, local parks, streetscapes, riversides and buildings.
‘Reconnecting’ is fundamental to how people experience their new environment, and Limerick City and County is a great example of how quickly society can pivot in response to the pandemic. This year’s festival will celebrate these creations through guided building tours, public talks, discussions, short films, public exhibitions, walking tours and family workshops based around 3 key themes:
Reconnecting to Heritage : Architecture of well-known Limerick landmarks and hidden corners. Reconnecting to Modernism : Celebrating and reconnecting to a rich Modernist legacy within Limerick. The theme also explores people linked to Limerick who have spearheaded our understanding of Ireland's Modernist legacy. Reconnecting to Public Life : Showcasing architecture and urbanism that can improve our understanding, quality of life, address climate change and enhance social interaction.
