The Limerick Unit of Order of Malta Ireland Ambulance Corps was established over seventy years ago in 1948 by Dr. Anthony Crehan assisted by Dr. Roche Kelly and Dr. Comber. It has grown to become one of largest units in the country whilst being based here in the centre of Limerick. We provide first aid and community services primarily to Limerick City and County and the greater Midwest Area. Here
in Limerick the Order of Malta has a Cadet Unit (10-16 years old) and a Senior Unit. Our Senior Unit is made up of voluntary members of all ages from various backgrounds. Our membership is also greatly complemented by our volunteer medical professionals – Doctors, Nurses, EMT’s and Paramedics
As part of Order of Malta Ireland , the Limerick Unit is part of an overall organisation that has approximately 4,000 volunteers involved in over 69 active units across the island of Ireland with ambulances, rapid response 4×4’s, mobile clinics, support vehicles, medical bikes and command centres available. Here in Limerick , we provide medical cover at many sporting, civic and social events right throughout the city and county. In addition to First Aid , the Limerick unit also actively engages in patient transport, community care, nursing services and assistance to other charities when needed. Our members from across Limerick City and County are trained in in various skills: Basic First Aid, Nursing Skills, Patient & Manual Handling, Cardiac First Response (CFR), Youth Leadership, Child Protection,Light Rescue Skills, Ambulance Equipment,and can progress to Emergency First Responders (EFR) and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT).
