Love, Grace’s Place
The idea of Love, Grace’s Place came from myself Pauline Gabbett, my daughter Grace was born at 29+1 weeks and weighed 780g. I never imagined anything like this would/could happen to us. Grace spent 14 weeks in the neonatal unit in Limerick, 3 of these weeks she was transported to the Coombe, Dublin. While in Dublin we encountered a financially hard time. We were lucky that after a week I was offered a room in a house in Dublin that provides parents with somewhere to stay for the length of time they need. the concept of accommodation for parents is not a new one but the idea to have it in Limerick is. For Grace’s 1st birthday I wanted to do something to give back to the unit to help other parents that find themselves in the same position I was in. We will provide a home away from home, a comfortable place to rest knowing you are close by to your baby. One of the most important things a premature baby needs is expressed breast milk from its mother and from personal experience stress can have a severe impact on the amounts a mother can produce, by having the house close by that the parents can use it will alleviate some pressure .i.e. travelling long distances.
Parents will learn babies cues long before any healthcare professional. having parents close by to baby shows benefits of the baby’s development. being in close proximity means that parents can deliver E.B.M much quicker and be closer by in case of any changes.
Doctors and nurses alike from the unit are delighted we are trying to lift this off the ground and know themselves first hand the importance of this home away from home.
I as yet haven't found the appropriate words to share to explain the importance of accommodation like this really is to our city.
