❗️Community Notice - Recycling Bins & Litter❗️

Over the past year or two, a local volunteer has regularly been out litter picking and has noticed that Mondays can be particularly bad for litter following recycling collections. On windy days especially, a significant amount of recyclable waste can end up blown around the area after bins have been emptied.

While this has often been assumed to be an issue with service providers, a recent walk along the village Main Street showed that much of the litter was unfortunately coming from household blue bins that had been put out overflowing, with lids not properly secured. When bins are left like this on windy nights, the contents can easily be blown out and scattered.

Residents are kindly asked, where possible, to:
- Squash recycling down so contents aren’t loose
- Ensure the bin lid is fully closed and secure
- Position bins so the handles face into the wind and the opening faces away from it, reducing the chance of lids flipping open

Small steps like these can make a big difference in keeping the area tidy and reducing litter 😊🙏🏼

Thanks everyone for your cooperation and care for the community.🌻

The evenings are closing in & sunset is around 8pm these days (even the dogs in the streets know it 😉), so the Tidy Towns group are working from 7-8PM now, on Mondays & Wednesdays 🌅
We continue to litter-pick, w**d, water flowers and general maintenance around the village...nothing too strenuous, we promise 🫠!
It's not too late in the year for new members to join us, so come along to our meeting point on either Mondays or Wednesdays: the village pump under the big Chestnut tree, at the Keadue Rd junction! Bígí linn, all are welcome ☺️

LOOKING GOOD!
The village is looking great: with lots of floral displays, w**d removal & regular litter-picking 🥳. It is widely commented on by visitors & locals alike, thanks to the hard-working and industrious volunteers 🙋‍♀️ 🙋‍♂️!
All 14 business & offices have been written to, asking them to take care of litter, w**ds and cigarette butt's outside of their own premises. The village may be small, but there are so many public areas in need of attention, that volunteers cannot possibly take care of everything! We look forward to their contribution to our efforts.
Come along 8-9pm any Monday/Wednesday, meeting at the pump.
All help is needed & greatly appreciated 😊

The latest Tidy Towns work....Great w**ding jobs done where needed; new composting arrangements; lovely new signs where we are reducing mowing, to encourage wilding; the usual regular litter-picking; flowers/watering& planting and a big re-painting & restoration of the 'grotto', at the Chestnut tree where we meet on Mondays & Wednesdays 8-9pm.🥳
We always need new volunteers, so you are welcome to join us anytime.
We cannot possibly cover all of the work needed 🙈, especially at business premises & at housing estates, so we are appealing earnestly to all concerned, to take care of these.
We thank you in advance, for your co-operation 😊

Well done & thanks to the individuals outside of 'Tidy Towns', who have replanted flower tubs & containers outside their premises & at entrances to some of the housing estates. The Tidy Towns volunteers appreciate your efforts 🏕 👏😁
▶️We are appealing to those in housing estates & to Residents' Assiciations to tend to their estates, in particular to w**ds. These estates form part of the Tidy Towns inspection & the TT group does not have the manpower to do this work/maintenance.
🤗Well done to those in 'Canal View', who have done a lovely job w**ding & planting flowers there... it looks very impressive!
😉 'Hats off' also to Marc & the management of 'Leitrim Quay' for their fine flower displays & maintenance of their area💐
*Tidy Towns volunteers have been busy in the last couple of weeks, collecting a lot of litter (mainly coffee cups, pizza boxes & take-away containers, cigarette boxes & butts, v**e, bags of dog 💩 left hanging on bushes 🙈, sweet & crisp wrappers, bottles, cans.....)
➡️We encourage everyone to bring home their litter when out & about.
*Tidy Towns volunteers have visited 5th & 6th class pupils in St. Joseph's & shown pupils the work of our local volunteers. All pupils received a letter for their parents, asking for more volunteers to join us, including teenagers & supervised children🙋‍♀️ 🙋‍♂️!
*We have repainted & tidied up the 1916 commemorative tree trail.
*We are currently working on the harbour/castle area.
*We have lots of ideas & plans, but we need more volunteers, so that we can move beyond litter-picking & maintenance of last year's projects ♻️

Great work done on Monday night by 6 'big' volunteers & 2 'little' ones! (see photos)... all contributions help.
It is rather disheartening though for those who are doing their best to keep the village well, to see 2 large flower boxes dumped off the bridge on Sunday afternoon/evening by drunken revellers, having 'fun' alongside the canal (see photo). There were several alcohol bottles collected & smashed glasses cleaned up. Those involved have little respect for the village.
JOIN US ON WEDNESDAY AT 8PM FOR AN HOUR😊!

🔊🔊🔊The village Tidy Towns group is back in action on a regular basis and is extending a request to locals to come and join in their efforts for one hour only🕗, on a Monday and Wednesday evening at 8pm🤗. There are painting, decorating, planting, watering w**ding, sweeping, litter-picking, up,cycling, re-cycling tasks for people of all ages, nationalities, and all levels of fitness!
➡️No contribution of work is too small and teenagers & supervised children are most especially welcome⬅️. Tools, equipment, paint etc. are all provided and the group is very pleased to have a new ‘home’ to store all of this. The meeting place is the village pump/Chestnut tree at the Keadue Road junction, at 8pm on both nights. We have a lovely little village, with great potential and take pride in keeping it well for ourselves, as well as for visitors. Ní neart go cur le chéile 💪💪💪! Come along tonight, Monday, and see for yourselves!
Have a look at the pics to see what we do. We would love to get new ideas from new members too 🤔!

☀️MEET UP @ 8PM TONIGHT!☀️

Tidy Towns volunteers kept the village litter-free through the winter & spring, at random times, when weather permitted! The group will formally get going again tonight at 8pm, to do a thorough litter-pick & to review the maintenance/upgrade of projects undertaken last year (O’Rourke’s Castle/Footbridge area/Church Grounds/Floral Displays/1916 Trail/Canal bridge access clearance/Flower Beds on approach roads etc....)
Please join us tonight, (Monday 12th at 8pm at the pump) to make a good start & share ideas. New members are especially welcome. Litter-picking sticks, bags, gloves provided 🤗
Spare an hour and come join us any Monday/Wednesday at 8pm🌺
