A date for your diary-
A great opportunity to hear about this fascinating period in the history of our area. We are very lucky to have Jacqueline coming to Culleen Hall to share her knowledge on the topic she chose to study for her Masters degree. She also has strong ties with Ballymurray as her mother Vera Somers hails from Corroy.
Her book will be available to purchase on the night
Admission is free.

This talk in Culleen Hall should appeal to anyone with an interest in this amazing strand of the history of this area. From 1717 to the late 1840’s Ballymurray and its Quaker Meeting House was the centre of a community of Quakers living in this area. Groups of families arrived here from Co Sligo, Co Meath and Co Mayo. Among other things they brought a strong tradition of weaving and to this day ‘The Quaker Island’ is the common name for Inch Cleraun. The ruins of the meeting house and graveyard can still be seen in Ballymurray close to the main Roscommon road.
Jacqueline Creaven d’Towey choose the topic for her MA thesis and her work was published by Maynooth College as part of their studies in local history series. Jacqueline has a strong Ballymurray connection as her mother Vera Somers grew up here. Really looking forward to hearing about her findings. Her book will be available to buy on the night for €10.
All are welcome. admission is free and please pass on the word.
