What a day! We had an incredible fundraising Open Day on August 2nd. Thank you so much to everyone who contributed, sponsored and supported this special annual event on the Kilmore Quay calendar. There are too many to mention individually here, but each and every one of you have made a real difference to supporting the RNLI to save lives at sea. THANK YOU! 🙏

As she is laid to rest today, we extend our sympathies and sincere condolences to our colleague Philip, to Dermot, Tina, Brendan, Valerie, Brigid and to all Susan' Walsh's extended family and friends at this sad time.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dílis. May she rest in peace.

As a mark of respect, the shop will remain closed today August 9th.

As he is laid to rest today, we extend our sympathies and sincere condolences to Monica, Davin, Paula, Brenda, Laura and all Jackie Connick's extended family and friends at this sad time.

Jackie was a dedicated former crew member and second coxswain with Kilmore Quay RNLI in his younger years. A fisherman and sailor, he was a man of the sea. Fair winds and following seas on your onward journey Jackie.

Water Safety Ireland, Irish Coast Guard and RNLI urge water safety vigilance over Bank Holiday weekend

Water Safety Ireland, Irish Coast Guard, and RNLI are urging swimmers, visitors, and holidaymakers to take extra care around the coast this Bank Holiday weekend and to familiarise themselves with local conditions before entering the water.

As many people travel to coastal locations during the holiday period, the organisations are also encouraging beach goers to take time to read local safety signage, check for potential hazards such as rip currents, and to swim at a lifeguarded waterway if possible.

Lifeguards around the country are busy dealing with incidents involving inflatable toys and air mattresses, which are lightweight, unstable, and which can quickly drift out to sea, or capsize unexpectedly, leaving users at risk.

If you are taking part in activities on or near the water, remember to:

Check the weather and tide times before venturing out

If walking along the shore, remain alert to rising tides to avoid stranding

Make every effort to choose a lifeguarded waterway, listed at https://watersafety.ie/lifeguards/

Avoid cold-water shock by entering the water slowly

Be aware of rip currents, which can rapidly carry you away from shore

Swim with others and within your depth

Leave inflatable toys at home

Avoid alcohol

Always wear a lifejacket or suitable buoyancy aid for your activity

Ensure children are kept under constant, uninterrupted supervision near water

Let someone ashore know where you are going and when you are due back

Always carry a means of calling for help, such as a fully charged mobile phone or a marine VHF radio.

If you see somebody in trouble on the water or along the coast or think that they are in trouble, use marine VHF radio Ch 16 or dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.

Kilmore Quay RNLI launched Monday afternoon (27 July) to assist the crew of a 9m motorboat with engine failure adrift near the Saltee Islands

The volunteer crew were requested to launch their all-weather Tamar class lifeboat RNLB Killarney by the Irish Coast Guard at 1.54 pm. The lifeboat under Coxswain Aidan Bates and with four crew members on board promptly launched and made its way to the scene north of the Great Saltee. Visibility was good with a light westerly breeze, Force 2 to 3. Sea conditions at the time were described as slight.

Arriving at the location at 2.18 pm, the lifeboat crew checked that everyone on board the vessel was safe and well before assessing the situation. Taking into consideration the position of the drifting boat, it was decided that the safest course of action was to establish a tow to bring the disabled craft back to shore.
The lifeboat was soon under way to the nearest available harbour at Kilmore Quay arriving at 2.50 pm without further incident. The vessel safely secured, the lifeboat returned to its berth in the marina and was made ready again for service.

Speaking following the call out, Coxswain Aidan Bates said: ‘We were very pleased that there was a successful outcome to today's call out. Being able to respond so quickly is due to the equipment and training our volunteer crew receive. As a charity, the RNLI depends entirely on public generosity, which is why we’re hoping there will be a big turnout for our annual Lifeboat Day this Bank Holiday Sunday, 2 August here in Kilmore Quay.’

The annual Kilmore Quay Lifeboat Open Day and fundraiser takes place on Sunday 2 August from noon until 5.00 pm at the marina in Kilmore Quay. The lifeboat will be on display with stalls, games, entertainment and refreshments available at the marina promising lots of family fun throughout the afternoon.

UNITE TO TURN THE TIDE

To date this year, 37 people have lost their lives in Irish waters, with each tragedy leaving a devastating and lasting impact on families, friends and communities.

The theme for World Drowning Prevention Day 2026 this Saturday, July 25th, is ‘Unite to turn the tide’

Recent warm weather has brought significantly more people to Ireland’s beaches, rivers, lakes and coastline. If you are planning activities on or near the water, be prepared, understand the risks, and take simple steps to help ensure that everyone returns home safely.

Remember to:
1. Check weather forecasts and tide times before heading out.
If walking along the shoreline, remain alert to rising tides, which can quickly lead to stranding
2. Choose lifeguarded beaches where possible, always swim with others, and stay within your depth
3. Be aware of rip currents, which can rapidly carry even strong swimmers away from shore
4. Warm weather does not mean safe water. Cold water can cause cold-water shock, significantly increasing the risk of drowning. Enter the water slowly to allow your body to adjust
5. Ensure children are kept under constant, uninterrupted supervision near water.
Avoid alcohol before swimming, operating watercraft, or spending time near the water
6. Always wear a lifejacket or buoyancy aid when participating in activities on the water
7. Pay attention to all water safety signs, flags and local warnings
8. Tell someone ashore about your plans and expected return time
9. Always carry a means of calling for help, such as a fully charged mobile phone or a marine VHF radio.

If you see somebody in trouble on the water or along the coast or think that they are in trouble, use marine VHF radio Ch 16 or dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.
