Did you know that some of our hedgerows can be dated back to the medieval times, some even as early as the Bronze Age? Used to mark boundaries & enclose livestock, they’re important for holding carbon stocks & providing food to wildlife. They are great for sheltering livestock in wet and windy weather, also acting as a wind-break & help with flooding or with much needed shade in hot days.

ACRES CP has Non-Productive Investments/NPIs, which are funded actions that can help improve current hedgerows or plant new hedges, such as Hedge Rejuvenation – a great action for restoring existing hedgerows with gaps & a need for improvement. These actions look to use a mix of native species like Blackthorn, Hazel, Holly, Goat Willow, Rowan and Sessile Oak.

At ACRES CP Kerry West Cork, we have a Landscape Action that farmers might find interesting; Virtual Fencing/Collars. Going hand in hand with targeted grazing actions, suitable cattle can be placed in a targeted area without any physical fence. Great for large upland areas & commonages in need of a graze!

Cattle are fitted with a special GPS-enabled collar & the farmers draw their virtual fence on an app on their phone. When the fence is drawn, a signal is sent to the collars & the farmer can monitor the cattle from anywhere. Cattle spend some time getting used to the collars first and need to be trained.

We have some interesting Landscape Actions here in ACRES CP Kerry West Cork that farmers can do to help increase their land’s resilience to wildfires.
Our targeted grazing landscape actions can help reduce Molinia/Purple Moor Grass, also known as Fionnán locally by using native breeds of cattle or sometimes horses to grazing in specific areas. Because this action is targeted, only a specific number of cattle can be left to graze in the targeted area for a defined period of time, otherwise it could lead to overgrazing and have the opposite effect. Horses and even goats can also be used to target graze Western gorse and Molinia. Both plants are very flammable and can ignite quickly when dry. Grasslands and peatlands can benefit from targeted grazing Landscape Actions where Molina or Gorse are dominant.

This two-day course chainsaw course is delivered by the experts at FRS Training, coordinated by South Kerry Development Partnership CLG, and funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.

Course content Includes:
- Conducting risk assessments for chainsaw work.
- Carrying out pre-safety checks.
- Safe cutting techniques, including timber under tension and compression.
- Sharpening, cleaning and preparing your saw for storage.

In May & June our Japanese knotweed ACRES CP Landscape Action training was carried out in Annascaul, Caherdaniel, Miltown and Kells. Farmers were shown a presentation on Japanese knotweed then brought outside for a demonstration by our team of how to remove the plants by either Foliar application or Stem Injection, together with PPE. Our team went through the requirements and methods used for each treatment application, and the safety checks that need to be done.

Japanese Knotweed is a large fast-growing invasive with flat, spade shaped leaves & pointed ends growing in a zig-zag pattern on the red/purple stem. In the late summer white/cream flowers clustered together appear.

Japanese knotweed has a very extensive underground root system called rhizomes, that can grow down to over a metre & almost 2-7m across. If even a tiny fragment of this root system breaks off, a brand-new plant can grow from it.
The plant can outcompete any native wildlife around it by blocking out sunlight & taking space away from native plants.

If you are a farmer in ACRES CP, and you want to remove Japanese knotweed on your land, we have two Landscape Actions that could help; Japanese Knotweed Spray or Japanese Knotweed Stem Injection along with mandatory 3-hour training sessions provided by the ACRES CP team.

Over the spring and summer our team at ACRES CP Kerry West Cork have been busy carrying out Landscape Action training courses with our farmers. Some of our Landscape Actions require a mandatory training course to be done before the action can be carried out.

In one of our invasive training days, farmers were shown how to treat Rhododendron ponticum by cutting the plant’s stump and treating it with herbicide. A blue dye is used to indicate which plant has been treated. For stem treatment, a hatchet is used to create notches in the stem to treat. Over the course of 3 hours our Agri-Environmental officers demonstrated how to treat Rhododendron ponticum effectively to farmers.
