The MacGillycuddy Reeks EIP Project aims to improve the sustainability and economic viability of farming in the MacGillycuddy Reeks. This will be done through the development of practical, achievable actions and innovative solutions in order to improve the condition of the habitats of this unique Natura 2000 area, in close conjunction with the landowners/farmers in the area. Landowners here face d

ifficult challenges farming in the MacGillycuddy Reeks due to the terrain, climate, succession issues, economically unviable labour-intensive practices; and the rising pressures brought about by increasing recreational activities each year. The MacGillycuddy Reeks Mountain Access Forum was established in May 2014 with the aim of protecting, managing and sustainably developing the MacGillycuddy Reeks Mountain Range. The Forum consists of:
Local Elected Landowners, Elected Community representatives, Elected Local Guides representative, Elected Small Business representative , Elected Recreational Users , South Kerry Development Partnership’s Rural Recreation Officer, Department of Environment, Community & Local Government (Rural Recreation Section) ,National Parks & Wildlife Service representative, Kerry County Councilor, Kerry County Council representative, Fáilte Ireland representative, The Forum is chaired by local businessman, Stewart Stephens. Halting and reversing the obvious and worsening path erosion on the Reeks is a priority action for the Forum.
