New Lus na Gréine Community Centre opens in Crokers Hill in Kilkenny

For the Thomas Hayes Trust, taking responsibility for Lus na Gréine represents a significant new chapter in its work.

Founder & CEO Angela Hayes said the centre reflects how the organisation’s work has grown from responding to tragedy & mental health challenges to creating spaces that strengthen community & connection.

This is a beautiful piece recognising our Teac Tom Volunteer Listeners, who won the National Small Groups Award at last year’s Volunteer Ireland Awards in Dublin.

Head office of Teac Tom, supported by The Thomas Hayes Trust CLG, is based in Kilkenny, so it was brilliant to see Kilkenny on the radar at such a significant national event.

Our Volunteer Listeners are there every week, helping to save lives.

Sometimes their role is about helping to keep someone safe until professional help can be connected.

Sometimes it's simply about being there.... listening! Giving someone the space to be heard when they may feel that nobody is listening.

That is the power of volunteering.

We are incredibly proud of our Volunteer Listeners & so grateful for the time, compassion & commitment they give to Teac Tom & to the people who reach out to us.

Nominations are open for the 2026 Volunteer Ireland Awards. The public is invited to nominate volunteers in their community across 11 categories, with one volunteer being named Christine Buckley Volunteer of the Year at the ceremony in November.

It was brilliant to be invited to speak at this important community event organised by Dungarvan Garda Station.

It was a wonderful opportunity to meet so many people from across the community & to share information about the supports & resources available to the people of Dungarvan.

We were delighted to be joined by Lord Mayor Liam Brazil & by Dr Declan Matthews from Youghal, who represented Youghal Talks.

It was brilliant to meet representatives from the so many other community services & groups who attended & who work tirelessly to support people across the area.

Events like this are so important. They remind us that there is a strong community in Dungarvan & that by coming together, sharing our knowledge & working collaboratively, we can do more to support people who may be struggling.

Su***de prevention is everyone’s responsibility. Whether you are involved professionally or simply as a member of your community, we all have a role to play in making sure people know they are not alone & that help is available.

Thank you to Dungarvan Garda Station for bringing everyone together & for creating the space for these important conversations.

Together, we can bring Light & Hope to those who need it most.
