Cedar Awards Ceremony Celebrated in Kilkenny
The Irish Lebanese Cultural Foundation hosted the 2025 Cedar Awards in Kilkenny over the weekend, bringing together friends of Lebanon, distinguished guests, and community representatives from across Ireland and abroad, despite the ongoing challenges facing Lebanon.
Held at the Pembroke Hotel, the event celebrated Irish–Lebanese cultural ties and honoured individuals who have made outstanding contributions to cultural understanding and human rights. Mayor John Coonan opened the ceremony, highlighting Kilkenny’s historical connections with Lebanon and welcoming the award recipients and their families.
This year’s awardees included Dr James Zoghbi and the late Professor Suheil Bushrui, whose family accepted the award on his behalf. Due to current circumstances in Lebanon, two additional recipients were unable to attend.
Dr Zoghbi, a prominent advocate and presidential advisor, spoke about his lifelong work promoting equality and the importance of integration. Professor Bushrui was recognised for his pioneering role in promoting Anglo-Irish literature in the Arab world and for his lasting academic legacy.
A message of support from the World Lebanese Cultural Union praised the awardees for embodying the enduring spirit of the Cedar and strengthening cultural bonds between nations.
The ceremony was attended by members of academic, cultural, and veteran organisations, alongside representatives of Lebanese and international communities. Musical tributes added to the occasion, and each awardee was honoured with the planting of a cedar tree in Mount Lebanon.
The Irish Lebanese Cultural Foundation, established in 2001, continues to promote cultural diplomacy and strengthen ties between Ireland and Lebanon. Membership is now open to the public.
