“One-beds are being advertised in Kilkenny for €1,500 a month.

Who can afford that?” asks our CEO Noel Sherry.

The solutions have never changed - we need more homes, more supply.

'More Than a Job: Women Working with the Homeless' brought powerful voices together on May 20, highlighting the growing reality of hidden homelessness.

Staff at the Good Shepherd Centre highlighted the problem with "invisible homelessness". Many people who are working full-time work, are struggling to find safe, secure housing. At the Good Shepherd Centre, the focus is on more than accommodation: it’s about dignity, trust, and helping people rebuild their lives.

Statement by the Good Shepherd Centre in response to the latest homeless figures:

The number of people living in emergency accommodation across Ireland has reached a record high of 17,548, according to the latest Department of Housing figures for April.

It is important to note that the full impact of the 7.5% increase in Q1 notices to quit has yet to be felt. Combined with missed construction targets, rising rents and ongoing cost of living pressures, Ireland is now facing a perfect storm.

We anticipate these figures will surpass 18,500 by Christmas.

Chairperson of the Good Shepherd Centre, Mr Liam Keane, stated: “I am at a loss that Government continues to argue semantics with the Opposition while children, men and women languish in record numbers in homeless accommodation.”

These families, couples and single people need urgent support.

Keynote speaker at our event recently Deirdre Healy, Regional Manager with the Good Shepherd Centre, highlighted the experience of a young woman who became homeless after losing her rental property.

Her situation is one services are encountering more frequently as housing pressures intensify, with people in full-time employment finding themselves couch-surfing or in unsafe accommodation.

“Mina’s homelessness was invisible,” Deirdre Healy said. “She showed up to work every day, but behind the scenes she had nowhere safe to sleep.”

Mina’s story reflects a growing reality.

Homelessness increasingly affects people who are working and trying to remain independent, particularly as rents rise and tenancies come to an end.
