The Sheep’s Head Way product makes low impact on the environment and local culture, while helping to create income, employment and the conservation of the local ecosystems. We make optimal use of our environmental resources while respecting the community and our product ensures economic benefit to all stakeholders. It is a rural, community based activity initiative, it is available to locals and t

ourists alike, it promotes awareness of our landscape, use of the ways involves physical activity leaving no carbon footprint, it is health promoting and free of charge. The Sheep’s Head Way offers a 150km way marked way which includes several National loop walks for day trip walkers, coastal, hill top, cliff side and river walks and a cycle route. It has signed and preserved the heritage, archaeological and angling sites along its route. The way utilises old mass, school and fishermen’s paths, the way marked way depends on the commitment from the main local stakeholders namely landowners/farmers who allow the walk through their lands. Other stakeholders are the local tourism providers namely Bed and Breakfasts, restaurants, shops, public houses, fishing tackle and angling providers and walking guides. The initiative is non weather dependent as walkers and outdoor activists go out in any weather, thus it is a year round tourism product and at present is the main tourist attraction to the area. Our logo is a registered trade mark. It is from a bible story and is depicted on the 6th century 'Kilnurane Stone' located on the western side of Bantry - it symbolises resilience.

The walkers might have come down from the hills but here at Christian Aid Ireland, we’re all still on a high! The weather was glorious on Saturday as almost 200 people joined the 15th annual Sheep’s Head Hike around the breathtakingly beautiful Sheep’s Head peninsula in west Cork. The views were amazing and it’s not hard to see why this is one of Ireland’s best-loved coastal walking routes. 🥾🥾 🌞

The feedback has been incredible with several participants contacting us to congratulate the local organising committee on the running of the event and to share their images of the day. 👏 📷

Donations are still coming in so it’s too soon to tell how much was raised but it looks like it might be more than €10,000. 😮

Our Bandon-based Church and Community Officer, Andrew Coleman puts his whole heart and soul into this event and is supported by a wonderful team which includes Margaret Skuce, David Hayward and Caroline Coleman. We are grateful to all of them and to the guides and leaders, as well as the bus drivers and caterers for their steadfast support again this year. Special mention goes to Kilcrohane Community Hall Committee, The Sheep’s Head Way Committee, Irish Red Cross, TFI Local Link Cork, Ulla Zepperit and her team who provided the catering, and the parishioners of Kilmocomogue Union of Parishes who assisted on the day. We're also grateful to Ecclesiastical Ireland who sponsored the advertisements and publicity for the event. ❤ 😇

If ‘ewe’ would like to join us next year, the Sheep’s Head Hike takes place on Saturday 7 September 2024. So, why not put the date in your diary and join us to help stamp out poverty. 🐑 😂

Today we remember Tom Whitty, one of the founders of the The Sheeps Head Way with a memorial walk at the Tin Pub in Ahakista at 2pm. The walk will go to Gorteanish Stone Circle, where Billy O'Brien of UCC will give a talk about his recent excavation of the site. We wish to thank Michéal Kelleher, Patrick O'Brien and Ahakista Plant Hire, Billy O'Brien and his team from UCC for their work on the project. Thanks to Cormac and Margaret Whooly of the Tin Pub for facilitating todays walk and refreshments. While going through old photos we found a picture from the 1990's Tom had sent to family in the States, after he had recently uncovered the Stone Circle (see attached).

To celebrate Heritage Week there will be a short memorial walk in honour of Tom Whitty marking 25 years since his passing, on Saturday August 12th. Registration at The Tin Pub at 2pm. There will be a talk at Gorteanish Stone Circle by Professor Billy O'Brien about his excavation. The walk will travel east and loop back to the Tin Pub for refreshments after. The walk will be on rough ground so bring walking boots but is not on the hill. the walk will be at most 1.5-2 hours. If the weather is very bad we can return back to the Tin Pub directly, or hold the talk there.

Tom Whitty was interested in local history and brought the Stone Circle to the attention of Paul Walsh of the National Monument Service. The site was then included in the Archaeological Inventory of Cork and an article was written by Paul in Archaeology Ireland at the time (see attached). During lockdown Tom Whitty's son was based in the area and cleared the site further with support from the Sheep's Head Way and advice from Professor Billy O'Brien of UCC. One dead strimmer later and the site was clear, and UCC completed a survey in 2020. This was the first step in organising an excavation, and over the next few years Billy organised the funding and logistics of the excavation. The site was cleared again this Spring (with no loss of strimmer), and over a 7 week period Billy and his team completed the dig, with expert help from Ahakista Plant Hire. The Sheep's Head Way would like to thank in the strongest way possible Billy and his team's hard work in organising and carrying out this project. We would also like to thank Micheál Kelleher for permission to allow these works to go ahead. This excavation will shed new light on Bronze Age West Cork and the restored site is an impressive local attraction. Gorteanish Stone Circle is a tangible link to the people who have lived, farmed, fished and flourished in this area for thousands of years.
