Call for Artists
Kilcock Heritage and Historical Society ( a sub group of Tidy Towns) would like to commission an artist to create a drawing or painting to represent Kilcock Fair Green as it would have looked in the 18th century circa 1790. Your proposal can reflect your artistic style and ambition. We don’t want to be overly prescriptive but would like the work to be historically correct as far as possible.
We suggest that the work should show a Fair in progress with pens of the animals (perhaps: cows, pigs, sheep, hens, ducks, also dogs, cats), horses and carts, people and children in clothing of the time. Certain names of the area could be shown on a few of the carts. We will provide the names. The work could also depict market stalls, with people making transactions, perhaps musicians in a corner.
The aspect could show the fair green looking across to where O’Keefes pub building is now. It could show this building in the background as a thatched pub with signage saying ‘Hart’s bar’
At the time there was no railway line or canal or road in front of the pub and the Fair Green would have extended from its current location across to the front of the pub and up alongside it to the square. The only road was Connaught Street which cut through the Fair Green. The work could show a stage coach on the road.
Pre 1795 the market cross would have been standing in the Fair Green. It would have been similar to the cross that is there now. The art work could show a clergyman making a pronouncement at the market cross.
The art work will be A3 size appearing on our signage board on the fair green. The board will be A1 size, the art work would be photographed and printed as A3 size on the board. The original art work can be any size as appropriate.
The work will need to be delivered by 15th July 2026 and will include the physical work and an image of the work in .pdf, .tiff or.eps file.
KHHS will be responsible for framing the physical work.
KHHS will meet with the artist several times: to discuss the design of the work, to approve the initial draft sketch, to approve the early stage drawing/ painting. After early stage work approval no further changes will be made unless there is a serious historical anomaly in the work. KHHS would like some or all of the work to be in colour, this and the media/ materials used can be discussed and agreed.
A deposit will be paid to the artist on singing of the contract, with the final amount paid on delivery.
If interested please send
1. Samples of your work
2. CV
3. Your expected fee/ budget for the work to [email protected]
