This event happening in Mullingar today looks very interesting. It fits nicely with the theme of our recent Heritage event “Istigh sa Teach: 100 Years of Kilbeggan Households”, where we looked at the 1926 Census to research the households of Main Street, Kilbeggan.

To celebrate the release of the 1926 Census, Westmeath County Council is delighted to host a landmark exhibition curated by the National Archives, entitled ‘The Story of Us: Independent Ireland and the 1926 Census’.
Launch Event this evening Tuesday 25th Sept, starting at 6pm in the Atrium, Mullingar County Buildings.
The exhibition runs between 25th August and 4th September in the Atrium on weekdays, between 10am and 4pm, with late openings until 8pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The plaques from our heritage event ‘Istigh sa Teach: 100 Years of Kilbeggan Households’ will remain on Main Street for one more day only, so if you haven’t had a chance to explore them yet, now’s the time.

There are 29 plaques to explore, located between the Crescent building right down as far as the Clara Road junction, each one marking a house lived in a century ago. You will also find a large plaque describing the project in the display window of the corner house in the Square, beside the bus stop.

Here are some photos of the plaques and the houses they’re displayed on, each one telling a small piece of Kilbeggan’s story and the families who lived here a century ago. Take a stroll, have a look, and enjoy this final day of our heritage trail.

Lovely article on our Heritage Event that took place yesterday. Thank you Shane King and Westmeath Examiner for the feature. We have had a lot of interest from people who didn’t make the event yesterday wanting to see the plaques. They will remain in place on doors, rails and windows for all of Heritage Week, for everyone to read them at their leisure throughout the week.

Kilbeggan is gearing up for Heritage Week 2026, and it’s wonderful to see local stories getting national attention. The Irish Farmers Journal has just interviewed two homeowners in The Square who have lovingly restored their historic townhouses; a great example of how heritage can be protected and lived in today.
