If you care about the future of dogs in Ireland, please have your say!
The Oireachtas is currently inviting the public to make submissions on proposed changes to dog breeding legislation: https://www.oireachtas.ie/en/committees/making-a-submission/public-consultations/20260731-public-consultation-on-the-pre-legislative-scrutiny-process-of-the-general-scheme-of-the-dog-breeding-establishments-amendment-bill-2026/
The Dog Breeding Establishments (Amendment) Bill 2026 could bring important changes to how dog breeding establishments are regulated, including proposals around breeding limits, breeding ages, inbreeding, socialisation, staffing, puppy sales and enforcement.
But before these proposals progress, the Oireachtas wants to hear what you think.
You don't need to be a breeder or an expert to take part. If you own a dog, work with animals, or simply care about dog welfare, your experience and views are valuable.

Your dog is giving you 'the' look. But when temperatures climb, the kindest thing you can do is to leave the lead hanging by the door.
Dogs can struggle to cool themselves down, and hot paths can burn their paws.
☀️ Walk early in the morning – if it’s cool enough
🌡️ Check the ground before you head out
🧠 Try a scent game or food puzzle at home instead
💧 Keep fresh water available throughout the day
Remember: your dog doesn’t need to miss out on fun just because their walk is cancelled.
A frozen dog-safe treat, a gentle training game or some time relaxing somewhere cool can make a pretty good summer day too.

There is a lot of well-meaning but incorrect advice circulating online about keeping dogs cool in hot weather, so here are some myth busters to help. Advice changes as veterinary science progresses. For instance, it was thought in the past that the quickest way to cool dogs was to wet the parts of them with the least amount of fur, but studies have found that thorougly soaking dogs with cold tap water, all over their body is the quickest way to cool them.
If you suspect your dog has heatstroke, do this as quickly as you can and call your vet. Get them wet & call your vet!

As Wimbledon fever takes hold, The Irish Blue Cross is reminding dog owners that tennis balls are made for the court….not for dogs!

Many people are unaware that tennis balls can present serious risks to pets. Their size and compressibility can create a choking hazard, while worn or damaged balls may break apart and be swallowed. The abrasive felt covering can also wear down dogs' teeth over time, leading to painful dental problems.

Former professional tennis player Conor Niland has joined our campaign to help spread this important message, alongside Luna the Schnauzer.

When choosing toys for your dog, opt for products specifically designed for canine play and always inspect toys regularly for damage.

With a yellow weather warning announced for the coming days, we are pleading with pet owners to help keep cats and dogs safe in the heat!
Dogs can be at risk of heatstroke in temperatures over 20°C, especially during exercise. Flat-faced breeds like Pugs and Bulldogs, overweight dogs, and pets with underlying health conditions can be vulnerable even in cooler weather.
🚫 Never leave a dog in a hot car
🚶‍♂️ Skip walks during peak heat or walk early morning / late evening
🌳 Ensure pets have access to shade indoors and outdoors
💧 Always provide plenty of fresh water
