Hi folks, hope everyone is enjoying the sunshine π
Ever since we finished Under Milk Wood, I've been asking myself the same question: where do we go from here?
It's not easy to follow a production that meant so much to us all. I didn't want to choose a play simply because it was bigger, louder or more ambitious. I wanted to find something that would challenge us in a different way and continue the journey we've started together as a collective.
The play that keeps coming back to me is Our Town by Thornton Wilder, a play that has been recommended to me on several occasions by both Anne Kenny and MairΓ©ad Berrill.
It's often described as one of the greatest plays ever written, and the more I read it, the more I understand why. On the surface it's about ordinary people living ordinary lives in a small town. But underneath, it's about all of us. It's about growing up, falling in love, family, friendship, loss, time passing, and appreciating the moments we so often take for granted.
What excites me is the thought of taking on one of theatre's greatest stories with you. Like Under Milk Wood, it asks us to trust the audience's imagination, to trust the text, and most importantly, to trust each other.
I can already hear the music, see the simplicity of the staging, and imagine the stories we could tell together.
Whatever lies ahead, I know one thing: Under Milk Wood wasn't the destination. It was the beginning of something special.
We will have an informal read-through of the play with the present group on Sunday 28th June.
Rehearsals will commence on Thursday 22nd August and will take place twice weekly on Sundays and Thursdays.
