A big thank you to Edie, who joined us today, delivering on one of our Gorey routes. A fantastic young lady, who visited us from Dublin to help out - an absolute legend! We love when the younger generation supports us and our service users really appreciate seeing her great smile at the door. Edie delivered on the Gorey B route with style, managing the delivery book. and ensuring the accompanying senior volunteers completed the job successfully

The Courtown Heritage Group is inviting the community to help uncover and preserve the rich heritage of the Courtown and Riverchapel area as part of our Heritage Audit 2026, funded by The Heritage Council's Community Heritage Grant Scheme.
Heritage is all around us. It includes our history, archaeology, buildings, landscapes, wildlife, traditions, folklore and community stories. Every photograph, memory and object has the potential to add another piece to the story of our area.
We are looking for information, photographs, documents, maps, artefacts and memories relating to:
📸 Historic photographs and family collections
🏰 The Courtown Estate and the Courtown family
🧱 The Brickyard and other local industries
⛵ Boat building, fishing, blacksmithing, stone masonry and other traditional trades
🏖️ Tourism and the development of Courtown
⚽ Sporting clubs, schools, churches and community organisations
🌿 Natural heritage, local wildlife and habitats
📖 Folklore, place names and local traditions
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Everyday life in Courtown and Riverchapel through the generations
Original items will be treated with the greatest care. Where appropriate, they will simply be photographed or scanned and returned promptly to their owners.

NORTH WEXFORD COMMUNITY RESILIENCE INITATIVE
It's Time for a Community Resilience Plan for North Wexford

The recent spell of extreme temperatures has reminded us that climate change is no longer a future challenge—it is affecting our communities today.
During our deliveries this week, Meals On Wheels Gorey & Courtown carried out Wellchecks on every service user. We found a number of older people experiencing difficulties because of the heat. Thankfully, our volunteers were able to respond quickly, arrange assistance, and ensure that everyone was safe.

But it raises an important question.
What happens to those who don't receive a daily visit?
Across North Wexford, there are many older people and vulnerable residents living alone. During periods of extreme heat, severe storms, flooding, power outages or other emergencies, some may have little or no contact with family, neighbours or support services.
As these weather events become more frequent, we believe the time has come for North Wexford to develop a Community Resilience Plan. This should bring together local communities, voluntary organisations, emergency services, healthcare providers, local authorities, businesses and community groups with one common purpose—to ensure that no vulnerable person is left without support during times of crisis.
A Community Resilience Plan could include:
• A coordinated welfare check network for vulnerable residents.
• Better communication between voluntary organisations and statutory agencies.
• Community volunteers trained to assist during emergencies.
• Local resilience hubs where support and information can be accessed.
• Plans for delivering food, water, medicines and essential supplies during extreme weather events.
• Better identification and support for isolated or at-risk residents.

Meals On Wheels already demonstrates what community resilience looks like every day. Our volunteers don't simply deliver meals—they provide reassurance, identify concerns early, and often become the link between vulnerable people and the support they need. Imagine what could be achieved if every organisation across North Wexford worked together under one coordinated resilience plan.

We are calling on public representatives, Wexford County Council, the HSE, community organisations, emergency services, businesses and local residents to begin that conversation. The strength of a community is measured not by how it responds when everything is normal, but by how it comes together when people need it most.
Let's work together to ensure North Wexford is ready for whatever challenges the future may bring.

❤️ THIS HEATWAVE REMINDS US WHY MEALS ON WHEELS IS SO MUCH MORE THAN JUST A MEAL ❤️
Today was one of those days that reminds us why every knock on a door matters.

As temperatures soared across North Wexford, our volunteers didn't just deliver meals. They also delivered bottles of water, (and ice to one), checked that everyone was coping with the heat, and, most importantly, made sure every service user was safe and well.

During those Wellchecks, we found a number of our service users who were experiencing difficulties because of the extreme temperatures. Our volunteers immediately did what they always do. They stayed with those who needed help, contacted family members and the appropriate services, and ensured that support arrived quickly.

Because someone cared enough to knock on the door.
Because someone took the time to ask, "Are you alright?"
Because our volunteers know that sometimes the most important thing they deliver isn't the meal at all.

We are delighted to say that every one of those service users is now safe and well. To our incredible volunteers—thank you.
You don't simply deliver meals. You provide reassurance, friendship, kindness, dignity and, on days like today, you can make the difference between someone struggling alone and someone receiving the help they need.

This is why Meals On Wheels has always been more than a food delivery service. For many older people, we are the one guaranteed visit each day. We are an extra pair of eyes, a listening ear, and sometimes the first people to recognise when something isn't right. It is a responsibility our volunteers carry with remarkable compassion every single day.

As our population ages and extreme weather events become more common, these welfare checks are becoming increasingly important. Yet despite the growing demands on our service, our HSE funding was cut. Today's events are a reminder that the value of Meals On Wheels cannot be measured simply by the number of meals delivered. It is measured in the people who are kept safe, the families who have peace of mind, and the lives that are protected because someone cared enough to call.

Today, we are simply grateful.
Grateful for our volunteers.
Grateful that everyone is safe.
And grateful to be part of a community that looks after one another. Thank you all for your continued support

🌡️ HIGH TEMPERATURE WARNING - PLEASE CHECK ON ELDERLY FAMILY, FRIENDS & NEIGHBOURS 🌡️

With temperatures remaining unusually high, Meals On Wheels Gorey & Courtown is asking everyone across North Wexford to take a few moments to check in on elderly relatives, neighbours, and anyone who may be living alone. A simple phone call, a knock on the door, or offering a bottle of water could make all the difference.
💧 Encourage older people to drink plenty of water.
🏠 Help keep homes cool where possible.
📞 Check in regularly with elderly relatives and neighbours.
🚨 If you are concerned about someone's welfare, don't assume someone else has already checked.
Together, we can help ensure that no one is left to face these extreme conditions alone.
