Pike in the Tana River, Norway are estimated to consume at least 250,000 salmon smolts annually, according to new data from researchers at the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA).

The findings are based on analysis of stomach contents from more than 2,000 pike collected in the river system. Researchers estimate that pike consume around 46 salmon smolts per kilo of pike annually, with smolts making up roughly one third of the predator’s summer diet.

The study comes as the Tana River system, once considered the world’s most important river for Atlantic salmon fishing, has seen a dramatic decline in salmon stocks. The river has been closed to salmon fishing since 2021 following the collapse of the salmon population.

Warming river temperatures are causing invasive northern pike to eat more fish, threatening already declining salmon populations.

Some sobering facts about invasive northern pike in our region.

Of the 75,000 manually removed pike mentioned in this document, about 24,000 have been removed by our crews. The Cook Inlet Aquaculture Association Board of Directors has prioritized invasive pike projects in an effort to protect salmon runs.

🎣🧊Southcentral Alaska lakes won't be thawing any time soon, so grab your tip ups and a 5 gallon bucket and head out to the lake!

Northern pike, an invasive species in Southcentral Alaska, can be harvested from many lakes throughout the region all year round. If you are a beginner to Northern pike fishing, or ice fishing in general, check out this link below to watch a presentation from a couple years ago by ADF&G Biologists on Northern pike fishing in Southcentral Alaska. You'll learn the rules, regulations, techniques, and places to go target pike near Anchorage and the MatSu valley.

Different continent, same story.

The annual effort to suppress northern pike in Lake Roosevelt has begun. For the past ten years, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) has worked cooperatively with the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation and the Spokane Tribe of Indians to suppress and monitor Northern Pike in Lake Roosevelt.

WDFW will conduct gillnet suppression starting next week and continuing through mid-June. WDFW will also conduct a couple days of gillnetting in Nine Mile Reservoir between Seven Mile Bridge and Nine Mile Falls Dam in mid-June.

Northern pike are an invasive species that threaten native fish populations. They are aggressive predators that can cause large-scale changes in fish communities. An older female northern pike can produce up to 250,000 eggs. Suppression and monitoring efforts are critical to protect native and important fisheries throughout the Columbia River drainage, including endangered salmon and steelhead stocks.

In recent years, WDFW also conducted Northern Pike gillnet suppression at Lake Spokane (Long Lake) each spring. However, after several years of declining northern pike numbers during suppression efforts, a reservoir-wide gillnet survey conducted in 2025 produced zero northern pike. Moving forward, WDFW will implement a reservoir-wide survey every 3 to 5 years to ensure northern pike do not become reestablished.

We are currently in the midst of the spawning season for invasive pike.

Egg laden fecund hen fish are being targeted along known migratory pathways to where they spawn in the lake margins.

Stomach contents again show consistent predation on native juvenile brown trout in Lough Corrib SAC.

Rising temperatures in a Southcentral Alaska river have led to a hungrier population of invasive northern pike, a trend that could imperil native salmon and other fish species.

Is that a little salmon?! 😱😱
Yes, it is. The northern pike has a juvenile coho salmon in its mouth. 😵🐟Pike are ferocious hunters and voracious eaters, and in the wrong place, like in the lakes of Southcentral, that spells bad news for our local ecosystems, including the salmon.
